The Type-79 main battle tank was a first-generation MBT used by the military of Songguo. It is almost a carbon copy of the Kaxakhi T-62, and it is believed that the plans to build it were stolen by Operation 0185. There were once nearly 5,000 of these tanks in service, but there are now only 3,264 in 102 battalions, all of which have been upgraded to so-called "Super 79s". Large numbers were also produced for export.

The Type-79 has seen action in a number of conflicts, including the Namkwon Emergency, the Southwest Frontier War, the Blue Banner Rebellion, and the 6-6 Crisis. Lessons learned in these conflicts have helped to shape subsequent Songhua tank design.
