The 2022 Democratic Party presidential primaries are a series of elections held in the 16 states of Arabi to determine which Democratic candidate in the 2022 Arabin presidential election will become the nominee of their party. The primaries are currently ongoing, having started on March 12, 2022 and is scheduled to end on June 15, 2022. There are currently five candidates running, with one dropping out during the primaries and two dropping out before the primaries began.
In order to win the nomination a candidate must win more than half the delegates allotted to the Democratic Party. In this election 480 delegates have been allocated to the Democratic Party, meaning a candidate must win 241 delegates in order to win the nomination. Both parties have regulations on how delegates are awarded to each candidate. If no candidate receives more than half of the delegates allotted, then any candidate that has won delegates but dropped out must choose which candidate still in the race they wish to give their delegates to. If in the rare event that occurs and still no candidate receives more than half of the delegates then the party will choose which ever candidate has the most delegates.
Delegates are awarded to each candidate based on the percentage of votes they receive in the election. Over the years Congress has attempted to reform the way elections are held but ultimately have failed each time. Opponents of how elections are currently held say it is "unfair and allows for the party to sometimes end up choosing whoever they want." Proponents of the way elections are held say the elections are "fair and proportional, making sure each candidate receives the amount of delegates they fairly and squarely won."
