The Old Cathedral (舊宗, ghwe-tsung) or more formally Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (哲心廷宗, tik-sem-ling-tsung) is a large church that serves as the seat of the Archbishop of Kien-k'ang. It was constructed around 1500 following the destruction of a previous church that stood in roughly the same place since 1442. It is called the "Old Cathedral" because a newer cathedral belonging to the Sylvan Catholic Church was built in 1580 only a kilometer away.

Organ

The cathedral possesses a large pipe organ of five manuals and pedal, with 11,120 pipes in 239 ranks. The organ was first recorded in 1544 and gradually expanded in later centuries, the last major expansion being done in 1859. The organ is founded on the Eisenmaat style and was later altered with heavy Ostlandic influence.

When the organ was first completed, it is likely that it possessed only its Hauptwerk, Rückpositiv, and Pedal divisions. The Brustwerk is known to have existed since 1604, and the Oberwerk in 1630. In the major rebuilding in 1721, two 32-foot stops were installed and bacame the basis in the Hauptwerk and Pedal division. At that time, a new division called the Hinterwerk was also installed, which functioned like a second Hauptwerk except founded on the 16-foot pitch. The organ is considered the country's largest up to the completion of the City Hall Organ in 1901, which initially possessed 13,100 pipes in 270 ranks.

The Old Cathedral's organ is often thought of as a physical history of the development of the pipe organ in Themiclesia, as an imported instrument was adapted for local music and tastes. It would proceed to have a strong influence on local musicians and instrument-makers, and aspects of its design were even canonized as principles in Themiclesian organ-building. For example, the Hauptwerk or Great division was founded on the same pitch as the Pedal division, and this characteristic became common in Themiclesian-built organs for both religious and secular settings.
