Mercurium was a Jumbosan speed and neoclassical metal band from Banouba, Jumbosa, formed in 1983 by lead guitarist Marc Baros with drummer Kris Namadu. The band released five full-length albums, and one EP before disbanding in 1991. They were most notable for Baros' for the time very fast guitar playing and for most of their songs being purely instrumental. Their first three albums, that became known as the Mercurium Thrilogy, were purely instrumental, but Mercurium would aquire vocalist Baptiste Zahudon for their 2 last albums. The Mercurium thrology have often been called the magnum opus of speed metal, and have also been credited for pioneering fast and technical guitar playing. Lots of thrash, death, power and other extreme metal guitarists have cited Marc Baros as a huge influence for their guitar playing. Despite their huge infuence on bands and guitarists, they never did achieve any mainstream success, instead they got a huge cult following. Marc Baros and Kris Namadu played in Mercurium for all 8 years the band was active, but the band decided to disband 1991 because they thought that they couldn't perfect fast metal any further. Marc Baros ticket to fame would be when he joined the Thrash metal band The Axiom Enigma created by ex member Phillipe Achille.
