Pre-History

Most experts believe that by roughly 6000BC-5000BC, the first Proto-North-Germanic peoples arrived in Cradebetia. At their height, they spanned from the tip of the Wosracan peninsular to small areas in Western Augera. The first formed civilisations were tribal clans that influenced surrounding areas around their tribe's main settlement. In the Hearecester Chronicles, dated around 3400BC, the Wosracans split the Proto-North-Germanic peoples into three groups. First was the "Dde-Gogloniaids" (South Northern-Germanics). These were the ancestors of the modern Cradebet peoples. The second group was the "Orill-Gogloniaids" (Western Northern-Germanics). These people were the ancestors of the modern Seather peoples. The last group was the "Bregbryn-Gogloniaids" (Mountain Northern-Germanics). This group is recognised as extinct with only a few thousand people having any background culturally or ethnically with these people.

Pre-Annexation

Before modern day Cradebetia was annexed by Wosrac in the Lorisian Unification Wars, Before being annexed into the First Kingdom of Wosrac, modern-day Cradebetia was heavily populated by Proto-Northern-Germanic tribes. The descendants of the modern Cradebetpeople. They lived in tribes with no concept of national unity, making them weak to invasions by foreign powers. These tribes would often raid and loot nearby nations and other neighboring tribes for gold and resources. With the growing threat of the Duchy Of Mulford becoming apparent in 629, these tribes would form the Confederation of Cradebet Tribes lead by the Jarvinnuk Tribe. This was met with initial success, repelling many armies in the First Mulfordian-Cradebet War of 642-643 AD and even killing the Mulfordian Duke, Losic. However under the reign of Lorisa 'The Great' the confederation began to lose ground in the 648 Mulfordian-Cradebet war and would be annexed in the same year.

Wosracan Rule

After being annexed into the newly formed Kingdom Of Wosrac in 648AD, the territory of modern-day Cradebetia was split into 8 Duchies and ruled by Wosracan-Cradebet dukes. However, these dukes were often overlooked and Cradebet opinion in the Kingdom overruled. The dukes of these eight duchies didn't have the same authority as those who ruled the more Wosracan duchies in the North. From 1168, several Anti-Cradebet laws were passed. These included the 50 year ban on Cradebet in Schools and the removal of Cradebet as a recognised language. From 1195, forced resettlement of Cradebets was introduced. This saw a mass expulsion of Cradebets from Gertland, a historically Cradebet duchy.

Growing Autonomy

After the failed 1718 War of Ellanghas Indpepedence, Wosrac began giving autonomy to duchies with a high minority populations. This included Seathera, Ellyn and 7 of the 8 Cradebet Duchies. The duchy of Gertland was excluded as by the late 1690's Cradebets were a minority in the duchy. The seven dukes were now had a near equal say in the Kingdom as the other Wosracan dukes, and were even allowed to build personal militias and small naval squadrons. However, the decision to exclude Gertland from this treatment angered the seven dukes. They started to build large militias that rivalled some of the smaller regiments of the Wosracan Army. Despite only having one coastal duchy, they constructed a small but impressive navy. While they were warned several times by the Monarch, the continued to arm themselves.

The New Years Revolution

On December 27th 1751, Duke Kerlisbund of Cugnad demanded that Gertland was to be given autonomy otherwise the 7 dukes of Cradebetia would declare a separatists war. The ultimatum had a deadline of 5 days for a response. When on the 1st of January 1752, the Wosracans declared the demands 'Illegal and against the Imperial Constitution' Kerlisbund called his coalition to war against Wosrac The war started as a disaster for the Cradebets, who decided to go on the offensive. They vastly underestimated the strength of the Wosracan army, suffering heavy losses at the battle of Hurrinsby. On the 19th of January, the order was given to hold the defensive grounds. This strategy at first looked doomed to fail as Wosrac occupied over a fifth Cradebetia by mid February. However, by March the Cradebets were holding the border just south of Gertland. After the war began to stalemate, a peace treaty was signed on the 15th of April.

The Treaty Of Sudbrigge

Following the New Years Revolution, Cradebetia was given independence in the treaty of Sudbrigge, 15th Of April 1752.

The treaty declared that:

  • The Seven Duchies Of Cradebetia Are To All Be Given Independence
  • Gertland is to remain a Duchy of Wosrac
  • A Truce Between Wosrac And The Seven Duchies Is To Last 10 Years.
  • The Seven Duchies Are To Have A Truce With Each-other For 15 Years.
  • Wosrac Will Recognise The Seven Duchies As Independent States And Renounce Their Claims.

The Formation Of The High Kingdom

Following the successful Independence war from Wosrac, four of the seven freed duchies joined together to form the 'Northern Cradebet Ducal Union'. These were the duchies of Cugnad, Tuvaweth, Unasby and Lellisa. They recognised Duke of Cugnad as their ruler while maintaining some elements of autonomy for each duchy. The declared capital was Sudbrigge, Cugnad. In 1768, a border dispute lead to the brief '1768 War of Wosrac Aggression' or the '1768 Cradebetia Dispute' as it is known in Wosrac. This caused the remaining three duchies to serve under and join the NCDU. After the war, the High Kingdom Of Cradebetia was formed. High King Kerlisbund was crowned in 1769.

The 1840 Coup

With many Cradebets harbouring anti-Wosrac sentiment down many generations, many distrusted those who had any sort of Wosracan sympathies. There were many reports of lynching Wosracans who inhabited Cradebetia as 'traitors'. However in 1839, High Queen Arliena Vellisbund passed a law allowing any residents of the Wosrac province of Gertland free citizenship in Cradebetia. Many took advantage of this with Wosracans from other duchies moving to Gertland to claim citizenship. This enraged the Cradebet population, with wide-spread distrust of the Monarchy, the Cradebet Guard, a Nationalist-Authoritarian group, overthrew the Monarchy on September 2nd 1840. This gave birth to the 'Grand State Of Cradebetia'.
