Johnathan “John” Rodrick Wesley (b. 1837). His father was William Rodrick Wesley, a merchant among the first settlers of Antarctica in 1831. He was born in McKay Point Settlement (modern day Rothera). In 1855, Wesley was sent to Niagara to study mechanical engineering. However, he chose history instead and received his doctorate degree in 1863. Unable to find a job as a professor in universities, he spent another few years in Niagara to complete his mechanical engineering degree. In 1868, Wesley briefly returned to ACS and worked as a manager in his father’s shipping business, where he met a lot of Niagaran officers.
Two years later, Wesley left for Niagara again. Using his connections, he was awarded colonelcy (1870) in the Royal Corps of Engineers during its rapid expansion in the 1850s and 60s. His regiment was deployed to Kimberly, Zarareland, where he saw action for the first time alongside Zarare colonial militia. In 1872, Wesley and his regiment returned to Niagara. He met with an old sailor friend who told him stories of him traveling in Furbish Islands (actually he just visited a few ports and was drunk most of the time) which persuaded him to go on a trip.
Using a little connections, Wesley got himself the paperwork needed to transfer to Furbish Islands as an “assistant” to the Niagaran military attaché (his dad’s friend in school and colleague) in the Furbish Islands. He boarded a ship in June 1873 to FI but didn’t arrive until January 1874. Upon arriving he knew he fk’d up on the timing. He never reported to the embassy due to the fact that he lost his map, most of his money, and his luggages on the way to FI. Wesley roamed around during the remainder of the war with only his old colonel uniform, a compass, a sword, an official document from the embassy, and a musket without bullets.
Wesley returned to Niagara in 1876 and commanded another regiment to support operations in Niagaran Polynesia and later Løkta. Upon his father’s death in 1881, he moved back to Antarctica along with his wife and two children to Rothera. He was among the earliest professors at Rothera Institute of Technology, and later awarded the rank of colonel and honorary brigadier general of the ACS Army. He passed away in 1911 at age 74.
His grandson, Raymond D. Wesley, served as the Prime Minister of ACS during GW2 and an important advocate of “forward defence policy” which dictated ACS military strategy during the 20th century.
