Guri, alternatively known as Watergate City, and formerly Watergate-Ureville-Iryen, is the capital city and administrative center of the Riamese Federation, serving as the de facto national capital, as well as the largest city in Hirethia.
The Metropolis of Guri occupies a large part of the northern coast of the Inner Lagoon, west of the Sefan Peninsula on the Nostrian coast.
Denonym
While the term Guri remained unofficial for decades, it remained as the de facto way of referring to the lager urban agglomeration until recently made official, mainly, as its origin remained relatively unknown. The name was, however, popularized by times of the Peaceful Revolution through pop culture. Multiple explanations have tried to pinpoint its origin.
The most widely accepted idea is about the term being a politically-motivated constructed word that agglomerates the initial letters of the three large towns that once encompassed the Watergate Bay: Watergate, Ureville, and Iryen.
Another theory explains its coinage from shortenings and later modifications of the denonym of Portagur; another nearby city, now referred to as Port of Guri or Port'o'Gur in informal settings. The word itself is theorized to have originated as a despective way to name the inhabitants of Portagur and its surrounding areas, which would have eventually been coined by regional slang as a local nickname for the larger metropolitan area.
Because of ongoing power voids and clashes between authorities of Uryville and Portagur in 2022, the term has grown in popularity as a possible new official name for the three-city metropolis around the Leight river.
