The Assembly of the Union (Galet: Assamblea da l'Uniun); (Menteschalese: Versammlig vode Union); (Audan: Assemblée de l'Union); (Coastale: Asemblea da Unión); (Alkali: Tajmaɛt n Tduklit) is Galeteri's federal legislature. It meets in Regenza in the Palace of the Union.
The Assembly of the Union is bicameral — composed of the 255-seat Council of Representatives and the 54-seat Transnational Council. Members of the Council of Representatives are distributed according to population in the various states within the 18 constituent nations. Each nation has two seats in the Transnational Council, independent of population distribution. Both are elected in full once every four years, with the last election being held in 2020.
The Assembly of the Union possesses the government's legislative power, along with the separate constitutional right of citizen's initiative. For a law to pass, it must be passed by both houses and approved via referendum. The two houses may come together as a United Assembly in certain circumstances, such as to elect the Council of Equals (the head of government and state), the President of the Commonwealth, the Federal Chancellor, or (only in times of war or martial law) a commander-in-chief.
Composition
The Assembly of the Union is made up of two chambers:
- the Council of Representatives, with 255 representatives; and
- the Transnational Council, with 54 councillors.
Seats in the Council of Representatives are allocated to the states of the 18 constituent nations, proportionally, based on population. In the Transnational Council, every nation has two seats.
United Assembly
On occasions the two houses sit jointly as the "United Assembly of the Union". This is done to:
- elect members of the Council of Equals, the President of the Commonwealth or (only in times of great national danger) a commander-in-chief
- arbitrate in the event of conflicts between Federal authorities and the nations;
- issue pardons; or
- listen to special announcements
The United Assembly of the Union is presided by the Council of Representatives's presidency.
