Budiarto Megat Gombek (Pelangi: [budiˈarto gomˈbɛk]), commonly referred to by his initials BMG is a Surubonese politician and businessman serving as the 3rd President of Surubon since 2015. A member of the Coalition for Democracy and National Development (Gateku), he is the first president who was not previously a member of the Nomenklatura, previously employed in the exotic Timber trade, and later the gambling industry and had no previous political experience prior to his election in 2015.
Born and raised in Tasikbaya, he comes from a political family. His father Bintang Gombek was a BAHSUPAN official and a member of the countries Politburo, his mother Sari Burhan was a diplomat and served in various positions including as Ambassador to Christovodia, East Miersa, and Kitaubani. He served in the military as a Pegakidi from 1960 to 1965 and graduated from the National Technical-Industrial University in 1970. He worked in logistics for BMB between 1972 to 1983, He then took over as chief procurement officer for Syakanas between 1983 and 1992. He would then found and operate the Universal Entertainment Group in 1992. being instrumental in the development of the special economic zone project. He would become the richest man in Surubon in 2010, surpassing Palm Oil tycoon Yaakes Rintu with an estimated personal net worth of $18.9 Billion, although some estimates calculate his wealth to potentially be in the hundreds of billions.
Gombek was selected as Getaku's presidential candidate in 2014. His nomination came as a compromise between the Nomenklatura, Military, and new civilian politician factions within the party. Gombek was elected by the Electors Assembly in 2015, to replace outgoing president Pierre Tanusudibyo. Gombek would break with the old political class during his first term as president. He would make moves to distance the army from political leadership, pass corporate tax reform, invest in numerous civil infrastructure projects, and would help to develop the Electoral Assemblies of the numerous Special Economic Zones. After he won a second 7 year term his government has taken on an ambitious health and education policy aimed at increasing surubonese economic competitiveness over the next 30 years. His government has been subject to numerous controversies. Including the Military Kickback Scheme, the Casino Girl Controversy, and the Asabaya Nuclear Reactor Controversy. His governing style is seen as hands on and authoritarian, while also increasing the opportunity for opposition parties to effectively run elections. While still categorized as a Southern democracy by international observers, political and electoral reforms have increased Surubons perception as a virgining democracy.
