Maxwell Interactive Entertainment, Inc. (MIE), formerly known as Stewart Games, Inc. and Maxwell Interactives, Inc. is a subsidiary of Fallish international conglomerate Maxwell. Established by Maxwell CEO Gorden Stewart in 1984, its primary purpose is for the development of video games and the PlayBox brand of video game consoles and products. It is also one of the world's largest company in the video game industry.
As Stewart Games, Inc., the company developed and released several coin-operated games, the most famous of which being Tyranny in 1985. However, the aftermath of the video game crash of 1986 caused the company to file for bankruptcy. Stewart Games would later be sold to Maxwell in the same year. Under Maxwell's ownership, the company began developing video game consoles, first with the MI-1000 in 1988, and PlayBox 1 in 1991. Domestically and in Calesia, Maxwell video game consoles were great successes, however, they struggled overseas against competitors such as the X. Since then, the PlayBox brand has evolved through 4 iterations, with the latest being the PlayBox 5, released in 2016.
MIE has produced several multi-million-selling game franchises, including Ground Zero, Horns, and Chedro the Snake. Chedro, Maxwell's mascot, is internationally recognised. Its name and branding are used for affiliated companies that operate amusement arcades and produce other entertainment products. Maxwell Interactive Entertainment is recognized for its video game consoles, creativity and innovations in video gaming. However, in more recent years, it has been widely criticised for its business decisions and the quality of its creative output.
