Yangchenia, officially the Dragon Empress's Domain of Yangchenia, is a small interplanetary country primarily located on two planets. It is an absolute monarchy and a theocracy, and is Lacia's only necrocracy. On Earth, it is bordered by Poi(Tibet), controlled by Eastasia, and Gesaria and Ramlekia to it's South. On Lacia, it is bordered by the Lethinian Colony of Saint Maria's Land to the west, and the Bealtian Colony of Msalka to the west. Yangchenia is the least populated country on Lacia, with a population estimated to be around 7.7 million people as of the 2020 census. On Earth, it is also sparsely populated, with it's lands home to only 34 million people, bordered by nations with hundreds of millions.
Despite being a small country, Yangchenia leads Lacia in the space race, with the country being one of the most advanced yet also very traditional. The nation dedicated 10% of it's annual budget to research, while a whopping 46% of the annual budget is allotted for Spirituality, as the nation is very religious, with the majority of the population adhering to the Yanginist Faith.
On Earth, Yangchenia occupies around 1,000,000 sqkm of land, mostly dominated by rugged mountains and hills, with large valleys and plateaus scattered all across the land. On Lacia, it occupies around 800,000 sqkm of land, and is mostly composed of mountainous terrain to the South, with the rest of the country being dominated by snowy tundra. Yangchan, Yangchenia's Lacian Capital, is the northernmost capital on Lacia, while the main capital is situated in the city of Yangchen.
The Guul-La Dynasty are the current rulers of Yangchenia, and have continuously maintained power for over 4000 years.
Etymology
It is widely accepted that the origins of the name "Yangchenia" stem back to 3000BC, during the reign of Yangchen Guul-La, the Empress of the Qiaxing Dynasty and most famously known for her central role in the Legend of Yangchen. After the death of her parents, Kaisheng and Lhotse, Yangchen emerged as the ruler of the kingdom, eventually renaming it to "Yangchenia" after her.
The name "Yangchen" itself in Tibetan means sacred, and when added to the suffix -ia meaning "land", then the name Yangchenia can be said to mean "Sacred Land".
History
Prehistory
Paleolithic
The first human species, Homo Erectus, arrived in the lands of Yangchenia around 1.8 million years ago, 400,000 years after they had first arrived in Gesaria. The oldest fossil discovered in Yangchenia of a human was discovered in the northern mountains, and dated back to this period. Homo Sapiens arrived in the lands of Yangchenia around 80,000 years ago, and largely lived a hunter gatherer lifestyle for around 70,000 years. Around 50,000 years ago, there was a notable shift on where ancient humans lived in Yangchenia, and early inhabitants of the region began to be classified into two - mountain dwellers and plain dwellers, based on where they lived. Yangchenia's population during this time is estimated to be around 7800 people.
Neolithic
The Neolithic Age in Yangchenia is considered to have begun about 10,000 years ago. Because the Neolithic is conventionally defined by the presence of agriculture, it is accepted that it officially began during this time period. Agriculture was primarily focused on cultivating rice.
Metal Ages
During the Metal Ages, the region had a thriving metal works industry, with numerous metal artifacts being uncovered across the nation like swords and metal tipped arrows.
Around 6000BC, the land of Yangchenia, as well as the lands of Poi, Gesaria and Ramlekia were occupied by the Qiaxing Dynasty, which rapidly grew in power and strength following the rule of Wangfang I, renowned for his victory during the Qiaxingi-Dumeygan War against the Dumeygan Empire in 6200BC.
However around late 5000BC, the Qiaxing Dynasty was rife with corruption and cronyism following the death of Jade Emperor Yuanling, dying without an heir to the Qiaxing Throne. His cabinet, known collectively as the Order of the Naga , named after the divine, or semi-divine, race of half-human, half-serpent beings that reside in the netherworld, appointed fellow member Kang Luofang to the throne, which largely allowed them to siphon the imperial treasury for their own gain.
The people of Qiaxing despised the new leadership, and looked for ways to end the corruption that has taken over the ruling classes. In 5090BC, the people of Qiaxing united under a warlord residing in Xanadu, one of the southernmost reaches of the empire named Gurdek Khadagh, starting a revolution against Luofang's administration. This rebellion would later be coined as "The Primordial Crusade", symbolizing man's fight against greed since the beginning of time.
At it's peak, the Revolutionary Armies had a force of over 50,000, and was easily able to overrun Luofang's weak and disloyal army. By 5089BC, the capital of Shinyang fell to the rebel armies, bringing an end to Luofang's reign and the Order of the Naga's corruption. Gurdek would later be crowned Emperor, and be known as the Topaz Emperor.
Legend of Yangchen - the Eternal Prophet
It is said according to legend that the deity of a warrior princess named Yangchen Guul-la watches over the land of Gesaria, Poi(Tibet) and the neighboring region of Lilytopia(Bhutan) ,constantly striking down what she deems as "forces of evil" who intend on disrupting the region's natural order. According to the accounts written by Dorjee Gyalzen, a Qakhok scholar around 3000 years ago, Princess Yangchen was born around 3000BC as the Empress of Gangtok, a city in Sikkim situated in the far South of Gesaria. It is said that Princess Yangchen was an extremely powerful princess whom everyone in the Kingdom feared and respected. In Dorjee's accounts, he mentions Princess Yangchen's extreme grip on power and stable rule in a region where rulers are often deposed from their thrones in a matter of months. It mentions how many critics of the Princess or people causing violence are often immediately thrown into dungeons where they are left to die in horrible conditions, but it also made the kingdom more peaceful and prosperous as there were hardly any conflicts between the many ethnic groups in the region.
Dorjee's accounts mention Yangchen's battle prowess and combat skills, especially displayed in the war against the invading tribe of Azunga, who suddenly invaded her Kingdom and burned many villages to the ground, killing many people.Yangchen immediately called up her army and faced the Azungas in battle, where Princess Yangchen single-handedly killed 7,000 men by herself. She went on to inflict many more defeats on the Azunga with her army of 7,000 , inflicting nearly 56,000-89,000 casualties on the Azunga, which represented nearly 75% of their male population. In March of 2975BC, her army reached the Azungan capital of Garjin, where she proceeded to defeat the city defenders and burn Garjin to the ground.
The sky on that day grew dark and cloudy as Yangchen entered Garjin with her army. The people of Garjin were all indoors trying to hide from her seething desire for revenge. The entire city was quiet until Yangchen screamed out loud "Men, burn this city to the ground and leave nothing breathing!". She lit a torch and began burning every house she came across as her men began killing those who were hiding inside. The sky glowed a dark orange as the city burned to ashes, along with the defenders of the city and the Azunga leadership while she watched from a hill away, satisfied with her revenge at the people who brought nothing but death and destruction to her domain. -The Legend of Yangchen, Chapter 21
In a diary recovered from the Talbushek Archives believed to belong to Empress Yangchen, she remarked on the sheer amounts of loot she had captured from the enemy, writing, but may not be accurately translated - "In my unmatched glory, I have captured nearly 200 tons of gold and riches from the enemy, as well as around 10,000 people from all ages and backgrounds that I can now make to do my bidding".It is believed that the captured slaves from Garjin were later used to construct Yangchen's opulent palace, which still stands today in the city of Qana-Qanaqaa.
Empress Yangchen died at the age of 46 in Caldemount in 2954BC, potentially of liver cirrhosis due to her extremtely lavish lifestyle, but in the legend, it is stated that Yangchen died after the Gods called her back to Heaven, saying that she had used her Mandate of Heaven well.[1]
The First Yangchenian Empire - 3000BC-1800BC
Princess Xiaoming succeeded Empress Yangchen in 2953BC, crowned on the 12th day of the 12th lunisolar month. She largely continued her mother's legacy, and was respected by her royal court. Empress Xiaoming led Yangchenia through the 2nd Azungi Wars, in which the Azungan Empire now led by a new government in Wakaoka launched a campaign of conquest against the Kingdoms in India, Yangchenia, and the Eastasian Dynasties. Under a massive coalition, these nations pushed the Azungi Empire back to Wakaoka, with the city being sacked by Eastasian and Indian armies in 2945BC, with Yangchenian Warrior Sukhbyul delivering the final blow to the Azunga.
Warrior Sukhbyul was one of the most loyal generals to Xiaoming, and was made the commander of the Yangchenian Army in 2940. However, Sukhbyul soon died during the Battle of Tharyuna in 2920.
In 2915, Xiaoming's reign abruptly ended when she was overthrown by her cabinet member Yuan Jin, who had her stripped of her title and exiled to a small island off the coast of China, 2000km away. The island Xiaoming found herself exiled to was completely deserted, with not even any signs of life. She was sure she was going to die but however, she saw a passing fishers boat and managed to get it's attention. When the fisherment came to talk to her, she introduced herself as Xiaoming, the Princess of the nearby kingdom of Yangchenia. The fishermen were in disbelief, noting her similarity to their own local goddess, Zhauxun. Believing her to be Zhauxun herself, they relocated to the island where the first spotted her, and developed a prosperous civilization on the island known as Xibei. Xiaoming soon found herself ruling over a similarly prosperous kingdom, and she recovered the confidence necessary in overthrowing Yuan Jin.
One day, she gathered all of the Kingdom's soldiers to the foot of Mt. Ykha, a tall and dormant volcano towering over the island. There she announced her plans to retake her old kingdom from the hands of Yuan Jin. All of the soldiers were worried, as Yuan Jin was said to have a powerful army.
We will certainly lose!, one of them said.
Xiaoming suddenly raised her hand. Suddenly, the volcano erupted, spewing ash all across the world, blanketing the Earth for four days and four nights. You will all not lose with me along with you. And so, her army set off as the ash clouds begin to spread all across the world. It took them two days to reach the city where Yuan Jin was living in. When they arrived, nearly all of the soldiers were sick or hiding from the severe ash storm that went through the land , suffocating many of them. Her army attacked, already used to the ash as they were living near a volcano. The once mighty Yuan Jin was forced into a tough spot. Soon, Yuan Jin's army was vanquished, and he himself were captured by Xiaoming. She ordered Yuan Jin to be slowly sliced to death a few days later.
These events are known as the Second Primordial Crusade.
Post Xiaoming Ancient Yangchenia
Yangchenia continued to be ruled by members of the Guul-la Dynasty for the next thousand years.
The Eternal Covenant of Tiamat - The Multidimensional Existence
Tiamat is seen as the most powerful God in the Yanginist Faith, nicknamed "The Mistress of the Four Dragons" - Chan Yu (Fire), Gye Pang(Ice), Min Zhu (Earth) and Tsenden Dru (Thunder). Tiamat wields all the powers of the natural elements, and functions as the multiversal moderator. In the Yanginist Faith, the month of Chu is dedicated for Tiamat Worship, which occurs every Sunday in local town monasteries. The Eternal Covenant of Tiamat, simply referred to as the Divine Covenant, is a covenant between Tiamat and the mortals of the universe.
In 2000BC, Yangchenian Scholar Yuan Gyatso, a famed historian and theologist, was approached by the sprit of Tiamat in a dream. In this dream, it was revealed to him the five universal truths.
- The universe he resides in is not the only one out there, and that parallel dimensions exist
- The Heavens and the Underworld are separate dimensions
- The Four Elemental Dragons are not the only Elemental Species, joined by the Serpent, Tiger and the Panda
- After death is a cycle of death and rebirth, and that people can choose to live again or proceed to the afterlife.
- Mortals have the capability to travel between dimensions, with the blessing of Buktepe
The five universal truths were largely against Yangchenian Theology at the time, being heavily monouniversal, and believing that the Heavens and the Underworld were all located on Earth, and that the elemental Dragons are the only elemental species there are. When Yuan Gyatso recounted his encounter with Tiamat to the High Lama of Yangchenia, he was called a liar, as what he was saying was completely against the teachings of Yanginism at the time. Ultimately, Yuan Gyatso failed to convinced them that time, and returned home.
Five months later, on the night of the blood moon, Tiamat reappeared, but this time in physical form. She manifested in the form of a young woman, similar to the servants in the Royal Court. This time, Tiamat revealed to him her covenant with the mortal realm.
Tiamat promised the people good fortune and wisdom, in exchange for their service to her. She taught Gyatso the power of travelling between universes, which involved a ritual known as the "Blessing of Buk'tepe". This ritual involved the burning of the scale of Chan-yu, which granted people the power to travel between universes.
She also taught Yuan Gyatso about "Soul Candles". These are candles that were infused with human souls, and their flames glow blue as a result. The Soul Candles are another form of sacrifice to her, which involved a human being slain, and their souls being infused into the candle, which when lit, sends the soul into the afterlife, without a choice to reincarnate again.
After revealing this to Yuan, Tiamat asked him to once again approach the High Lama, and reveal what he learned. Yuan went to the High Lama on the next day, but they once again called him a liar. The High Lama, annoyed by his repeated pestering, had him locked up in the Dungeons of Qana-Qanaqaa for the night.
However, that night, as the High Lama was asleep, Tiamat reappeared to him, this time looking enraged. "You, who is supposed to be the mediator between mortals and myself reject my teachings and put away my prophets!", she exclaims. The High Lama suddenly awakens from his sleep, looking upon Tiamat standing at the foot of his bed, her eyes glowing a dark crimson red, looking enraged. Before he could say anything, he was dragged by the goddess into the underworld through a soul candle, where he was brutally tortured for his doings.
Tiamat freed Gyatso that night, and the next day, he showed to the entire nation Tiamat's Covenants, which were:
- Thou shall believe in Tiamat as the Eternal Mistress of the Four Dragons
- Thou shall offer sacrifices to Tiamat every month
- Thou shall respect and revere the Royal Family as her mortal sons and daughters
- Thou shall recognize the High Lama as the intercessor between God and Man
- Thou shall live for the good of the nation
- Thou shall not disrepect the Holy Name of Tiamat
- Thou shall not harm the Four Elemental Dragons
- Thou shall respect the other Elemental Species
- Thou shall properly present the deceased to the afterlife
- Thou shall live in Paradise if all these are done
In the middle of his speech, Tiamat appeared in the form of a Eagle flying above the area, which made people further believe Gyatso's teachings. The Covenants of Tiamat were inscribed in stone tablets and kept in the Sacred Crypt of Xankweyi. The crypt's location is currently unknown to the public and is highly classified, with only a select group of historians allowed to access the site.
Yuan Gyatso died in peace at the age of 115, in the year 1975BC. To this day, he is known as The First Dalai Lama.
The Tribal Period - the Nomads of Yangchenia
Around 1800BCE, an unknown event caused the collapse of the First Yangchenian Empire. Many theories have popped up on the causes of this collapse, with the most common theory being the death of Emperor Wangjing around 1913BCE which led to a destabilization event within the nation, followed by a period of famine which killed upwards of 40,000 people. An asteroid impact in the Taklamakan Desert is also theorized to have caused the collapse, due to indirectly causing the famine.
After the collapse of the First Yangchenian Empire, the lands of Yangchenia followed in the footsteps of many of it's neighbours, and became home to nomadic tribes. These tribes were known as the Qakhoks, derived from the Qanupaq words Xakim and Ha'ok, meaning Living by Killing/Hunting. The Qakhoks lived a very nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle, although with some urbanized settlements, the largest in Yangchenia being Panhgharayi. These peoples were originally divided into two - the Luoyi Qakhoks and the Xanadu Qakhoks, however they eventually splintered and soon there were around 6 main tribes that dominated the land of the Himalayas during this period: the Choden, Kungar, Ramlek, Azung, Pol-en and Yangin. This period also saw a new Renaissance Period for the town of Qana-Qanaqaa, one of the region's oldest suriving settlements.
The first notable Qakhok leader was Khamsugyn Negvernasen, a Yangchenian born Qakhok, who arose in 1750BC. He was part of the Yangin Tribe.
