As then-Sandy Air Force Base was a test and evaluation base, they did not have a garrisoned fighter squadron and a new one with training specifically for interception was required. The 223rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron is part of the 11th Aerospace Defense Wing garrisoned at Sandy Orbital Defense Base. The squadron is tasked with aerial interception in protection of the HALOS guns at the base. The squadron operates 25 F-15CX aircraft.
