The 223rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron is part of the 11th Aerospace Defense Wing garrisoned at Sandy Orbital Defense Base. The squadron is tasked with aerial interception in protection of the HALOS guns at the base. The squadron operates 26 F-15X and 4 F-15E aircraft.

The squadron was previously known as the 223rd Pursuit Squadron and was active during the 3rd Hyborian Continental War.

Mission

The 223rd Fighter-Interceptor Squadron primary is to protect Sandy Orbital Defense Base and by extension the HALOS guns. Working with the 9th Air Defense Artillery Squadron, the 223rd ensures the HALOS guns are able to operate to ensure the protection of the skies of Hyboria.

History

An F-15C of the 223rd showing its underside of weapons, 1988.

The 223rd was reactivated in 1985 to provide dedicated fighter aircraft in the defense of the new HALOS gun array. As then-Sandy Air Force Base was a test and evaluation base, they did not have a garrisoned fighter squadron and a new one with training specifically for interception was required. Cadre were drawn from various other squadrons including the 501st Tactical Fighter Squadron. The squadron would be declared mission-ready by early 1986 and would conduct various alert sorties for the duration of the war.

The squadron’s pilots would be rotated out on a daily basis, with pilots accumulating so much experience and then being reassigned to a coastal interception squadron, with new pilots replacing them to be trained by the experienced permanent cadre.
