Altava, officially the Republic of Altava (French: République d'Altava) is a sovereign republic located in North Africa and the Greater Maghreb. Its shares it northern shores with the Mediterranean Sea, and shares land border with Sahara to the south, Algeria to the west,

Following the French invasion of Algeria in 1830, the French flooded the coastal cities, gradually establishing themselves as a significant part of the colony. The French Second Empire adopted the Code de l'indigénat in 1865, which allowed the Muslim population the opportunity to petition for French citizenship. After the collapse of the French junta, Algeria fell into chaos between the pier-niors and the Arab rebels that resulted in the violent partition of Algeria. After several decades of conservative rule in Altava, progressivism would largely make a comeback with the end of the Cold War in 1991. Altava opted to join the European Free Trade Association in 1997. After several decades of peace, Islamic extremism would begin to pose a threat to national security through terrorism, with the local domestications of Al-Qaeda rising in 2004 and the Islamic State rising in 2012.

Continued tensions in the region have made Altava isolated; holding unfavorable relations with several western nations. It has tried to repair its image with supporting peace with Algeria, but failed. It is a member of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and the International Monetary Fund. Applying in 2014 to join the African Union, the members of the Union voted to deny them membership.
