The Republic of CMGE is a small but densely populated country located on the central west coast of Atracia. The country was formed when four provinces, three of which were colonized by the people of Chiton and one of which was colonized by the people of Prybourne, unified into one nation in 1972. The name 'CMGE' comes from the initials of the 4 nations that combined into CMGE: Chiton, Maclova, Gebia, and Estrella.

Language

The majority of people in the nation speak English, with a significant minority speaking Spanish, Latin and Chitoni (although Chitoni is only commonly spoken in Chiton province)

History

Prehistoric and agricultural revolution

The area in modern-day CMGE was settled by hunter-gatherer tribes around 200000 years ago. It was a popular area because of its lake and temperate climate. Most people settled in the area of modern-day Chiton province, as well as the areas around the lake in Gebia, Maclova, and western Estrella provinces. Agriculture was adopted gradually from 400 CE to 1200 CE, and the people of Chiton gradually spread throughout what is now CMGE.

Warring tribes

As would be expected, many tribes formed shortly after agriculture was introduced. At the beginning, there were hundreds of tribes, but by 1350 they were consolidated into three provinces: Chiton, Gebia, and Maclova. These provinces, along with the Prybournean settlers of Estrella, were engaged in constant warring with each other.

Peace and unification

Starting in the early to mid 20th century, there was significant discussion regarding the unification of Chiton, Gebia, and Maclova, given that many found the constant warfare pointless and detrimental to all. This talk was further fueled by a particularly bloody war from 1965-1970 regarding a small amount of river that was controlled by Maclova, with the end result being virtually no change in the borders.

In March 1971, an alliance was created between Chiton, Gebia, and Maclova. In September 1971, that agreement was extended to Estella. In December 1971, Chiton, Gebia, and Maclova began discussing unification, an idea that was met with widespread support among all three nations. As such, the idea was agreed upon fairly quickly. In February 1972, Estrella was added to the proposed unification following intense lobbying by them in the prior weeks. On April 3rd, 1972, Chiton, Gebia, Maclova, and Estella officially united into one country, CMGE, which was named from the first letter of each of the 4 provinces.

Oligarchy and socialist revolution

As a result of the unification, an oligarchical government was formed consisting of 12 people; 3 from each province. This oligarchical government ruled in a manner that could be considered authoritarian, but the government did rapidly increase the standard of living from CMD 2018 $9000 in 1972 to CMD 2018 $25000 just 25 years later. In addition, they assisted with the rapid urbanization of CMGE, with many cities growing 5-fold, 10-fold, or, in the case of CMGE City, 150-fold. However, the lack of free speech and other political freedoms angered many on the left. These sentiments got massively fueled by the crackdown in 1996, eventually leading to the socialist revolution in 1998.

Capitalist revolution

The socialist government, unsurprisingly, turned out to be an absolute disaster, with conditions that one would see in Venezuela occurring only three years after the revolution. GDP/capita plumetted from CMD 2018 $25000 in 1998 to CMD 2018 $14000 in 2001.

During this chaos, many people in Estrella, at that time the most populous province of CMGE, moved across the border to Prybourne for refuge, settling mainly in one city in Prybourne. While there, several people created the rebel group 'A New Estrella', with the goal to regain control of Estrella and turn it into a capitalist nation. By the time an official war declaration was made in October 2002, the group had swelled to 350,000 members, an astounding number considering that only 1,200,000 people had moved to Prybourne.

A New Estrella made resounding progress in its first few months, even going so far as to capture the provincial capital in February 2003. During that time, A New Estrella gained many more members from the liberated cities, with its size increasing to 750,000 members. In March 2003, A New Estrella renamed itself to A New CMGE, with its new goal being to free all of CMGE from the oppressive socialist government. The movement also created two new movements in Portland and CMGE City, with the same goals. These three groups, with a total of 1.6 million members, quickly forced the socialist government into surrender, one which was issued on September 19th, 2003.

Constitutional convention and modern times

A constitutional convention consisting of 24 members (the four surviving Oligarchs, two of whom were from Maclova and two of which were from Gebia, the eight most senior members of the Estrellan revolution, the six most senior members of the Portland revolution, and the six most senior members of the CMGE City revolution) was quickly set up. The consitutional convention, which lasted from September 22nd, 2003 to December 21st, 2003, resulted in a constitution, a parliamentary government, and the hanging of most of the senior members of the socialist government for crimes against the people of CMGE. A vote for parliament was held on January 12th, 2004. It resulted in a near-even three way split between the Libertarian, Conservative, and Laborer parties.

No majority coalition was able to be formed, a fact that has been true in all elections until the one in 2018, where the Libertarian coalition won 378 of the 750 seats.
