Helmut Rommel; 27 February 1931 – 24 August 2004) was an Besmenian film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is frequently cited as one of the most influential filmmakers in Besmenian cinematic history. His films cover a wide range of genres, and are noted for their realism, dark humor, unique cinematography, extensive set designs, and evocative use of music. Between 1957 and 2004 Rommel produced and directed 15 feature films.

Life

Rommel was born in Könlenz in 1931, where he also spent his childhood. From 1942 to 1948 he attended the Olaf-Mutsgut-Regelschule in Könlenz. He received average grades, but displayed a keen interest in literature, photography, and film from a young age, and taught himself all aspects of film production and directing after graduating. After graduating, he worked as a photographer for the magazine ThemenHeute between 1948 and 1954. Between 1954 and 1956 he produced six short films for the television network BRF 1. With his short films, Rommel earned a total of 315,000 BS. So he found the finances to begin making his first feature film, Die Mörder in uns (1957). Die Mörder in uns was a commercial failure, but garnered several positive reviews upon release.
