Impiö Oyj is a Valkean state-owned multinational petroleum and renewable energy company headquartered in Källälivi, Valkea. It is active in all areas of the oil and gas industry, including exploration and production, transportation, refining, distribution and marketing, power generation, and energy trading. It is also a major chemicals manufacturer and a renewable energy producer, with signficant investments in biofuels, wind, solar, and nuclear energy. It is currently one of Lorecia's largest oil producers.

Impiö was founded as a mining company in 1887, but has since shifted to petroleum when it first discovered oil in 1926. It was nationalized in 1934 and became a key driver in the development of Valkea's petroleum industry. However, mismanagement from the Kansallist regime as well as increasing competition from Nynorsk Ostlijord and Caledonia saw the company's share of the market decline significantly throughout the 1960s and 1970s. After it was privatized in 1981, Impiö experienced a period of revitalization in the 1980s, as offshore oil reserves contributed significantly to its growth. In 1999, the Valkean government renationalized the company.

The company has a primary listing on the Källälivi Stock Exchange. As of 2019, the Government of Valkea is its largest shareholder, owning 55% of all shares, while the rest is held in public stocks.

History

Early history (1887-1926)

A significant iron deposit was discovered near the town of Impiö in 1885 - at the time one of Valkea's largest. In 1887, the Impiö Mining Company (Impiö Kaivosyhtiö) was founded and set up a mine in the area. Over the course of the 1890s, the Impiö mine became one of the Kingdom of Valkea's most productive mines, and the town of Impiö quickly grew in size over the next few decades. Copper and zinc deposits were discovered in 1897 and 1903, respectively, which further enhanced the mine's economic value.

Mineral exploration accelerated significantly in the wake of the Great Astyrian War, as iron from the Impiö mine was exported to both sides. However, production output fell in a few short years due to the outbreak of the Valkean Civil War.

Transition to oil and nationalization (1926-1976)

In 1926, Impiö surveyors struck oil in the Sorkkaharju oil field outside of Kovanen.
