The Mardin Isles will participate in the Aeiavision Song Contest 2019, returning after a one year absence. The Mardic entry for the 2019 contest in Navack will be selected through the national selection Comórtas Amhránaíochta Náisiúnta, organised by the Mardic broadcaster Teilifís na hInsí Mairdinde (TIM). The selection will consist of three semi-finals and a final.

Background

Prior to the 2019 contest, the Mardin Isles had participated in the Aeiavision Song Contest twenty-seven times since its first entry in 1987.

On 8 May 2018, TIM confirmed it would return to the Aeiavision Song Contest following its withdrawal from the then-upcoming edition.

Before Aeiavision

Comórtas Amhránaíochta Náisiúnta 2019

Comórtas Amhránaíochta Náisiúnta 2019 will be the twentieth edition of the Mardic national selection Comórtas Amhránaíochta Náisiúnta, which will select the Mardin Isles' entry for the Aeiavision Song Contest 2019. It will be the first edition since 2011. The competition will consist of 15 entries competing in three semi-finals on 25 January, 1 and 8 February 2019, leading to a seven-song final on 15 February 2019.

The three semi-finals will be broadcast from the studios of TIM in An Ráth while the final will be broadcast from the Campas Spóirt Náisiúnta in An Ráth. All four shows will be presented by Tadhg Ó Loingscigh and Deirbhile Nic Allmhúráin.

Format

The format of the competition includes three semi-finals on 25 January, 1 and 8 February 2019 and a final on 15 February 2019. Five songs will compete in each semi-final. The top two from each semi-final will qualify for the final as well as one song from the nine originally-eliminated songs qualifying as a wildcard finalist, completing the seven-song lineup in the final. The results of the semi-finals will be determined by a 50/50 combination of votes from the five-member jury panel and public televoting, while the wildcard finalist will be selected solely by the five-member jury panel. The winning song will be selected over two rounds: the first round of results determined by a 50/50 combination of votes from the five-member jury panel and public televoting determines the top two songs to qualify for the super final. In the super final, the winner will be selected solely by the public vote.

Jury members

On 9 January 2019, TIM announced the jury panel for Comórtas Amhránaíochta Náisiúnta 2019. In addition to making up 50% of the vote, the jurors will also give their feedback after each performance.

  • Bébhinn Ní Lása, 25, media personality and influencer
  • Conn Ó Faranáin, 30, radio DJ
  • Féilim Mac Raghnaill, 24, singer-songwriter, winner of Réalta Mairdindeach 2016
  • Onóra Ní Bheacháin, 53, singer, winner of Comórtas Amhránaíochta Náisiúnta 1989
  • Rónán Ó Ladhradha, 47, music producer

Competing entries

In early September 2018, TIM opened up submissions for artists and composers to submit their entries until 2 November 2018. Songs must contain at least 50% of its lyrics in Mardic. The entry fee was set at 180 bonn (around 35 NSD) per entry. TIM also reserved the rights to personally invite artists, composers and record labels to submit entries to the contest. On 5 December 2018, TIM announced it had received a total of 262 entries, including those from invited entrants. A jury panel was established to select the 15 songs for the competition. TIM announced the names of the competing artists and song titles on 4 January 2019.
