Overview

The Marovoanise Army (Marovoanise: Tafika an-tanety Marovoanise, Allessian: Marowanese landmagte) is the oldest and largest branch of the Marovoay Armed Forces. The army was officially established as the Marovoanise Army in 1966, though the army traces its roots back to 1908 when the Marovoanise ight Infantry Volunteers were created; the army was renamed the 'Marovoay Army' when Marovoay became a republic in 1966. In 2013, the Army had approximately 37,600 personnel.

The Army Headquarters is situated in Toliara; Commander of the Army is the highest appointment in the army who commands the army and is assisted by the Chief of Staff of the Army and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army. The Commander-in-Chief of the Marovoay Armed Forces is the President of Marovoay, who heads the National Security Council through the Ministry of Defence, which is charged with formulating, executing defence policy, and procurements for the armed forces.

History

The Beginning

Ceylon Volunteers

On 1 April 1908 by a proclamation issued by the Governor of Marovoay Lihan Pistorius, a Volunteer Force was raised in Marovoay. It was designated the Marovoay Light Infantry Volunteers (MLIV) in an attempt to compensate for the disbandment of the Marovoay Rifles in 1904. The Marovoay Light Infantry Volunteers were originally administered as a single regiment. However, over the years various sections of the volunteers grew large enough to become independent regiments. The different units that emerged from the Volunteer Force were the

Marovoay Defence Force Ordinance No. 3 of 1919

In 1919, with the enactment of the Marovoay Defence Force Ordinance No. 3 of 1919, the Marovoay Defence Force (CDF) was formed to bring under it all volunteer units for administrative, training, and logistics purposes. It continued to grow throughout the early period of the 20th century.

In 1922, the MDF was honored by the presentation of the Imperial and Regimental colors to the Marovoay Light Infantry (MLI).

In 1939, the MDF was mobilized and an enormous expansion took place which required the raising of new units such as the Marovoay Signals Corps, the Auxiliary Territorial Service (Marovoay) and also the Toliara Town Guard, which had been previously disbanded but was later re-formed to meet military requirements.
