Organised Chaos is a comedy series that aired weekly on MBC One between 2010 and 2018. It was notable for highlighting comedic tropes within the Malgravean political system and wider society, and has been consistently praised as one of the finer comedies Malgrave has produced. It was the first major role for Kim Hye-jin following minor roles in Revolution and Chess Club.

History

Malgravean Broadcasting Corporation attempted to start a political comedy in the 1980s, with a concept written based on a department tasked with integrating socialist institutions into the United Kingdom of Malgrave, however, the delicate censorship situation at the time followed by the economic problems of the Lost Decade meant that this project never went ahead.

Following the end of isolation Malgravean Broadcasting Corporation attempted to make another political comedy, with the release of Epping Central in 2002, however, the series only lasted for two years and is commonly regarded as a failure which failed to have the confidence to make a joke of the political process.

It was this failure that led to MBC abandoning this project for a few years and it wasn't until 2006 that the project was reviewed, with a few projects being proposed until the idea for Organised Chaos was settled upon with first season broadcast in 2010.

Synopsis

Organised Chaos follows the fictional Department of Ancestral Engineering and Social Solidarity Governance (DAESS) which supposedly acts to bridge multiple government departments together and confirm that all buildings in the country are built to standards that would be approved by the Ancestors, although, it is commonly joked that it is just used as a dumping ground for unpopular departments.

It primarily follows Minister Choe Eun-Ji (Kim Hye-jin) as she navigates the multitude of responsibilities under her purview alongside the pressure of being a politician, with a few dark references to getting a special visit from the Special Investigative Service or being involved in a MIDD-related accident.

Cast/Characters

Character Description
Kim Hye-jin as Choe Eun-Ji Choe Eun-Ji is selected after an internal review process and apparent academic study carried out by the Prime Ministers immediate team. It is hinted that this process was simply to find the most malleable candidate for the role, with the academic study simply being used to please the technocratic wing of the party.

Eun-Ji has some bold proposals to improve the quality of housing in the country and integrate non-governmental services into the activities of the state, however, she is constantly frustrated she has to deal with internal political rivalries and people who don't wish to see her doing well with their scraps. Eun-Ji also has to deal with rather comically inept staff, and a few episodes resolve around simply trying to prevent some career ending disaster.

Yi Su-Jin as Oh Sung-Min Oh Sung-Min works for the Prime Minister as a problem solver and is seen across multiple departments fixing issues that prop up, although, due to the problems caused by the Department of Ancestral Engineering and Social Solidarity Governance she is a regular face around the office.

It is explained that Sung-Min served in the Royal Navy prior to her involvement in politics which explains her rather coarse language and her ability to coral even the most incompetent into action using military-style discipline.

Larysa Pasternak as Julita Piotrowski Julita Piotrowski is a senior advisor to Eun-Ji, an experienced operator it is hinted that they've worked across multiple departments and been moved across due to her eccentric personality which is often credited to her as being born in the Dornalian Republic.

Julita is said to have served in the Dornalian Armed Forces which again is linked to her ability to last long in the political game, with Sung-Min even jokingly commenting that she is surprised that the advisor is still alive.

Eliza Chlebek as Maria Carrara Maria Carrara is an advisor that joins Eun-Ji in the first episode and is often responsible for assisting her escape from troubling situations. It is initially not explained how a competent advisor got in such a position, however, later on it is shown that she was essentially demoted to the department after gaining the ire of the Special Investigative Service by accidentally foiling a few smear campaigns.
Anatol Niemec as Miłosław Król Miłosław Król also works as an advisor to the Prime Minister and is often sent to check on the status of various departments. Miłosław is highly ambitious and often works to undermine the work of Eun-Ji in an attempt to blame Sung-Min and gain promotion, although, his schemes always fail in comic fashion with some even working to promote his rivals.
Angela Necchi as Lidia Filippi Lidia Filippi serves as Media Manager for the Department and is supposed to prevent disasters from leaking to the press. Lidia has a friendly relationship with several journalists, however, is often unable to prevent them from reporting on the shambles of government, although, she often manages to reduce the impact from their release which is credited as saving her job.
