The Reichstreitkräfte (Realm Armed Forces) are the unified armed forces of Ostlichtor. The various states of Ostlichtor are not allowed to maintain armed forces of their own, since the Commandments of Allegiance states that matters of defense fall into the sole responsibility of the federal government.
History
Command organisation
The supreme authority of the Reichstreitkräfte rests with the Obersteführer, currently Volker Altendorf. The Obersteführer is the commander-in-chief of all military and law enforcement forces within Ostlichtor, and all soldiers, sailors and airmen swear an oath of allegiance to the Obersteführer. This is distinct from many other modern nation, whose armed forces swear an oath of allegiance to the state, or that nation's governing document.
Actual day to day command of the Reichstreitkräfte rests with the Oberbefehlshaber, who is the chief of the Oberkommando der Reichstreitkräfte, or High Command of the Realm Armed Forces. The Oberbefehlshaber will generally be a field marshal in rank. From here, command is broken into three sub-commands, covering the high command of the ground forces, air attack forces, and naval forces. In times of war, the Grenzschutzkräfte, or Border Guards Forces, will also be subordinated to the Reichstreitkräfte.
