The Socialist Party of Tarper, abbreviated as SP, is a Democratic socialist political party in Tarper. It is one of the largest parties in Tarperti politics. It was founded in 2015 with the merger of the three existing socialist parties, the Socialist Unity, Labour, and Social Democratic Parties. The party was created as part of the Chancellor's "One big party" plan.

The leader of the SP, Maximilian Herzog, is the current Chancellor of Tarper. It is an observing member of the Socialist International and a full member of the Progressive Alliance.

History

After a landslide victory for socialist parties in the 2013 election, and the creation of the Socialist Front political alliance of between the Labour, Socialist Unity, and Social Democratic parties, there grew a desire to create a truly united socialist party. In the autumn of 2015, the leader of the Socialist Front, Maximilian Herzog, created the "One big party" plan. This goal of this plan was to create a united socialist party in the federation.

Immediately after the enacting of the plan the parties ceased publication of their newspapers in favor of the national newspaper, The Tarperti Journal. In early 2016 the student, youth, and women's organizations along with the Tarperti Confederation of Labour, the largest and only union federation in Tarper, changed allegiance to the Socialist Front with the organizations merging into larger version of their respective operation. In late 2016 the Socialist Front had renamed itself as the Socialist Party of Tarper and the three member parties completed the merging process. The three parties still exist, but now have transitioned into political organizations within the Socialist Party and run their members under the banner of the Socialist Party.

Since the 2017 election, the SP is the leader of the government coalition with the Union and Communists. The as of early 2018, popular opinion of the government is positive with a large percentage calling it, "the best since the start of the country".

Voter base

The party is particularly popular in the northern states. The party has maintained its popularity with a large range of socialists from Marxists to Social Democrats.

Party platform

The SP applying the principles of Democratic socialism and emphasizing the "principles of social ownership of the means of production". The SP's policies derive from Democratic socialism, social liberalism, as well as the execution of communist policies given by the former CTCR.

As a socialist party, the SP supports looser punishments of crimes and supports neutrality in foreign conflicts unless force is needed. In terms of immigrants, the SP supports initiatives to integrate immigrants through free government provided language courses, and aims to further remove immigration control. The SP emphasizes the preservation of cultural traditions.

In terms of foreign policy, the SP commits itself to Covenant integration and strong relations with Plamyadia.

Opponents of the SP are the Christian Democrats, or CDSF, the New Liberal Party (NLP) and the Conservative and Nationalist Party (CNP). The SP has however governed in one federal-level and numerous state-level Grand Coalitions with the CDSF as well as in-state and local-level coalitions with GLU. The SP rejects coalitions with either liberal, right, or far-right parties.

Very recently the Green Liberation Union, a green party, is the preferred partner of any SP government since the SP and GLU have similar attitudes towards fiscal policy and Covenant integration along with recent and historical ties.

Membership

The members' average age was 35 years. 6% of the Christian Democrats were under 15 years old. A 2007 study by the Herzog-Tapia Theorist Bureau showed that 45% of members were female and 55% male. Female participation was higher in the former Alliance states with 29.2% compared to 24.8% in the former National Confederation states.

Herzog-Tapia Theorist Bureau

The Herzog-Tapia Theorist Bureau is the think-tank of the SP. It is named after the powerful political family of Tarper. The foundation offers political education, conducts scientific fact-finding research for political projects, researches the history of socialism, and supports and encourages Covenant unification, international understanding, and development-policy cooperation. Its annual budget amounts to around 120 million Krups.
