The Wellish exonym Svaldland is directly derived from the Svaldish endonym Sväljdland. This name is derived from the Old Svaldish word svælgha, meaning "to devour", as early Svaldish mythology believed that the Svaldish tribes were scions of jörmungandr, and so referred to themselves as Værldsvælgher, or "world devourers".
