The name Tom Teufel was taken, according to its creator Viktor Laffmeyer, because Tom Teufel sounds kinda similar to the Besmenian phrase zum Teufel.

In the 80s Viktor Laffmeyer worked as screenwriter. Since the middle of the 80s, he had been planning to make his own film. However, he hadn't really had an idea what the film was about. He probably had the idea for Tom Teufel sometime in 1988. After Laffmeyer further expanded the character and its universe, he finally planned to make a film about Tom Teufel. Laffmeyer had worked on the script for an year. In 1990, he sent the script to various film studios. However, no film studio was interested in his script. Laffmeyer still didn't want to give up the figure. So he had the idea to publish Tom Teufel as a comic. In 1991 he sent his comics to various comic publishers. Only the BAUM Verlag was interested in Tom Teufel. The first comic was published in October 1992. The comic developed to success among teenagers and adults. The Tom Teufel comic series was also the very first comic series in Besmenia, which was aimed exclusively at adults.
The design of Tom Teufel originally looked different. In the first sketches that Laffmeyer drew in 1989, Tom had a devil's tail and devil's horns instead of a top hat.

Personality
The comic was first published in October 1992. Until 2000, every comic was published every two months. It has been published mostly monthly since 2001. A comic book is about 30 pages long and contains two stories. The 100th edition was published in 2006. The 200th edition was published in 2017. On May 6th, 2020 it was announced that the 236th comic which will be released in December 2020 will be the last comic of the series.

Merchandising
Tom Teufel appears in various forms as merchandising items (e.g. on T-shirts and baseball caps). In the past the figure also appeared as an advertising icon.
The comic became popular quite quickly and was one of the most read comics in Besmenia in June 1993. Because of the black humor and satire, the comic is particularly popular with teenagers and young adults.
Positive criteria say that in Tom Teufel you see a rebellious figure who entertains the young people from generation to generation with funny and satirical stories. Negative criteria mean that Tom Teufel glorifies violence and that children should not read this comic.

From the 90s to the early 2000s the comic was banned in most of Besmenian schools.

Laffmeyer announced in an interview in 2015 that the character Tom Teufel was based on the murderer Hubert König, who lived in the nearby forest in Laffmeyer's hometown Waltersroda in the late 1960s and killed his victims there.
Tom Teufel was also inspired by an old friend from Laffmeyer's college days who owned an old pick-up that needed renovation, and secretly smoked cigars.
Tom Teufel in the media
In early 1996 the BRF offered Laffmeyer to produce an animated series about Tom Teufel. This is how the series The Tom Teufel Show was created. However, the series was canceled after 41 episodes in 1999. Reuns were broadcast on SR from 2000 to 2002 and on VINCTV since 2002. In 2009 VINCTV announced that it would continue the Tom Teufel Show from early 2011. Because of the great success, a 5th and 6th season were announced in March 2011. In early 2020, the series was extended to a further 3 seasons, with which the series runs until 2023.

Director Helmut Rommel secured the film rights to Tom Teufel in 1999. Rommel himself is a fan of comics and could very well imagine the comic as a film. The live action film "Tom Teufel" finally came to the Besmenian cinemas on July 25, 2004. The film is financially successful and was the second most viewed film in the country in 2004. It was also Helmut Rommel's last film, because he died of old age almost a month after the film premiere.

A second movie named The Tom Teufel Movie which is based on the TV show came to Besmenian cinemas on August 18 2019. The movie was very successful.
