A Council republic is a republic where the government consists of directly elected councils, whose members must act according to the interests of their electorate, or they face dismissal. Common characteristics of council republics are an association with socialism, temporary and instantly revocable representatives, an emphasis on collective leadership, and nonpartisanism. The political thought associated with the establishment and continuation of a Council Republic is known as Councilism and its proponents are known as Councilists.
