President before election

Adrian J Gower
Recovery Party

Elected President

Nena Glaasmeier
Recovery Party

Presidential election were held in the Hansa Federation on March 1st 1962. Former president Adrian J Gower decided not to run citing health concerns which made it the first election in which all parties held primaries. Selected for the recovery part was Vice President Nena M Glaasmeier and his running mate Veadland senator Jesse Wentz. Because of a split opposition and overall popularity Glaasmeier won in a landslide against Martin Zern of the newly formed Rechtsparty and his running mate Paul Vollenger. Glaasmeier won the Council of Hansa vote 27 to 20 to 6 which was the first time that the vote was really split. Glaasmeier had benefitted from the recent economic boom and full recovery from both the 53 recession and the overall depression of the post great war. Though the 1962 primary caused a schism in the Recovery party and the split and formation of the Rechtsparty the election of Nena Glaasmeier would directly lead to the modern day party system.

Recovery Party Candidates

  • Vice President Nena Glaasmeier
  • Senator Jesse Wentz
  • Senator Taylor Roentien
  • Governor Martin Zern

The major candidates for the 1962 Recovery party presidential nomination were Hansa Federation Vice President Nena Glaasmeier, Veadland Senator Jesse Wentz, Ostland Senator Taylor Roentien, and Appalonia Governor Martin Zern.

Glaasmeier was initially hand selected by Adrian Gower as his successor as early as 1961 which caused a huge divide in the party particularly with candidate and Hanseatic Armed Forces Secretary Martin Zern. Because of Glaasmeiers liberal beliefs, Zern walked out talking the right wing of the party with him and formed what would become the Classical party (part of the Rechtsparty). Because of the popularity of Adrian Gower and his endorsement of Glaasmeier, Roentien dropped out in late 1961 shortly before the Recovery party convention. At the convention Glaasmeier was formally chosen as the candidate and runner-up Jesse Wentz was selected as his running-mate.

Because of the Socialist parties refusal to joini the recovery party, the Socialist party remained largely outside of the mainstream as a fringe party. Weimsenland governor Bobby Piertz decided to run for president after his brother had failed to win in 1958. Piertz was much more moderate and was selected because of this.

General Election

Campaign Promises

The main issues of stability and the economy. Tensions were very high especially after the recovery party convention and the party split. Glaasmeier pledged a continutation of the stability and campaigned as an overall third term of Gower. Becuase he knew he would not win Zern campaigned moreso to get the name of the Rechtsparty out there and overall established the Rechtsparty as a solid alternative. Though this worked it would not be until the 1964 midterms that the Rechtsparty would get a senate majority.

Results

The election was held on March 1, 1962. Glaasmeier watched the election returns from his house in Visby while Zern held a public rally in Gallagher. Pretty early on, Glaasmeier emerged as the clear winner however Zern and and Piertz held steady in the west, however Glaasmeier held a majority of the Council of Hansa votes even if the Rechtsparty and Socialists were combined.
