General elections were held in the Ryukyus on August 30, 1972, which included the first-ever elections for the position of Premier . This was the first election since the Islands were Transferred by the United States to South Africa per the 1971 Manglapus Nixon Treaties . James Benjamin Lampert of the New Democratic Party and the last High Commissioner of the United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands on the gubernatorial elections with 39.59% of the vote, becoming the first ever popularly elected Premier of Ryukyus
