1 Defence Road, also commonly known as the Ring due to its circular design, is (along with its adjoining facilities and buildings) the headquarters of the Chilokveri Ministry of Defence (MoD). As a symbol of the Chilokveri Armed Forces, the terms "the Ring", "1 Defence Road" or simply "Defence Road", are commonly used as metonyms for the Ministry of Defence and the Chilokveri military leadership as a whole.
Located on a 71 hectare site situated on the outskirts of Apelia, 1 Defence Road houses some 26,000 government, military and civilian employees of the MoD in a space of almost 600,000 m2 (6,500,000 sq ft). The majority of this area (approximately 339,250 m2 (3,651,700 sq ft)) is below ground level. The building features 6 floors, with 4 above ground and a further 2 full basement levels which extend below the central park located within the Ring. The central park occupies 12 hectares (30 acres) and is often colloquially referred to as "the bullseye" in reference to the site's primacy as a target in a nuclear war.
