The first leadership election for the Popular Alliance of Socialists & Democrats was held between June and September of 2007, shortly after the merging of the Labour Party, the Democratic Centre Party, the Socialist People's Party, and the Civic Alliance. It was won by the leader of the pre-merge Labour Party, Jakob Askildsen, who led in all four rounds. Coterminous with the leadership election, Anton Rudolfsson and Helga Olafsdottir were elected co-Deputy Leaders of the new party.

Five candidates were successfully nominated, four of whom had been the incumbent leaders of their respective parties at the time that they merged into the PASD; Jakub Askildsen of the Labour Party, Nilas Ahmadi of the Democratic Centre Party, Lars Bergman of the Socialist People's Party, and Johan Magnusson of the Civic Alliance. The fifth candidate, Pål Skoglund, previously served as leader of the Labour Party between 2002 and 2004.

The former deputy leader of the DCP, Esther Steffensen, had been serving as acting leader of the PASD and as Leader of the Opposition during the election.
