The 2016 Trjebian General Election was held on June 20, 2016 to elect the 51 members of the Legislative Assembly of Trjebia.

The incumbent United Trjebia Society under Prime Minister Jhames Mhe lost re-election to Redhe Sje and the Liberal Alliance, with their worst election result until 2020. The far-right Thirteen Kingdoms made historic gains, doubling their seat count. The Liberal Alliance would form a coalition with the Left-Green Alliance bringing them into government for the first time.

Prime Minister Sje's cabinet was confirmed 28-22 by the Assembly on July 2, 2016 and were sworn in the next day at the Royal Palace.

Background

In accordance with the Trjbian Charter, the legislative term cannot last longer than 4 years, and an election must be held within 6 months of its expiration or a vote of non-confidence. Trjebia uses a negative confidence system, meaning that the opposition must produce an absolute majority (27 votes) in order to dissolve the government, rather than the government needing to produce an absolute majority itself.

The last election was June 2012 to elect the 163th Assembly. It resulted in the governing United Trjebia government losing its majority but staying in power after forming a narrow coaliton agreement with Seniors +. The narrow coalition majority was bolstered in 2014 when Liberal MLA Samson Sze defected to the government side over the issue of gambling rights.

Electoral system

In Trjebia there are 4 multi-member districts containing a total of 51 seats directly elected by closed list proportional representation, using the d'hondt method with an electoral threshold of 5% in all districts. Any independent candidate who earns one seats worth of votes in a district is automatically elected.

The electoral districts always coincide with Trjebias 4 administrative districts.
