General elections were held in Borland on Saturday 2 May 2020 to elect all 177 members of the State Assembly, the lower house of the National Diet.
The incumbent government of Premier Gustaaf Brants, consisting of a coalition between the Democratic Workers' Party (DAP), the Left Party (PvBL), and The Greens, was in power going into the elections. The coalition government faced criticism over high unemployment and immigration from centre and right-wing parties, who surged in opinion polling conducted ahead of the election. On election day, the Conservative Party (CPvB), led by Justen Verhoeff, became the largest party with 51 seats; the DAP the PvBL lost a significant number of seats each. Borland First, the premier right-wing nationalist party, gained four seats and became the third-largest party in the legislature.
The CPvB moved to make a coalition government with its ideologically-similar colleagues in the Free Liberals Group and Alliance88, as well as with The Greens.
