Legislative Elections were held in the Alezian Union on Monday 1 November 2021 to elect all 886 members of the National Parliament of the Alezian Union through universal suffrage using a mixture of First Past The Post (FPTP) and Party-list Proportional Representation system enacted in all 443 of the nation's constituencies.

Winning 119 constituencies and 148 party seats with 33.37% of the public's votes, the Meme Party recorded its' all-time best result in any Alezian election, and is the first time that Meme would lead the Parliament. It is also the first time (continuing from North Alezia) that the Alezian parliament wasn't lead by a Liberal-Democratic since 1988.

The Socialist-Labour Party recorded the highest gain in the election, winning 86 constituencies and 119 party seats with 26.81% of the votes. This is also the first time that the party gained second place.

The leading party in the previous parliament, the Liberal-Democrats recorded its' biggest defeat in its' history, losing 71 constituencies.

After the election, a governing coalition was made since Meme did not reach an absolute majority. It resulted in the "Orange Coalition" consisting of Meme, Liberal-Democratic (also the first time it did not lead any coalition), Greens, Internationalists, and United New Alezians.

In the opposite side, the Joint Conservative List created the "Blueberry Coalition" with Alezian Values, Economic Efficiency, Nationalists, and Patriots.

In the middle, Socialist-Labour stood in as a third wheel, joined (although not in a coalition) with Native Alezians (initially a member of the Orange Coalition) and the Fundamentalists (initially a member of the Blueberry Coalition)

Background

After the Reunification of the Alezian Union, the newly formed National Council announced that the first general election of the country shall be held in November-December 2021. This was in order to immediately exercise the nation's power to democracy without borrowing the North Alezian parliamentary seats for too long, and thus, the preparation for the election was held immediately even after the Reunification Ceremony started, and the newly made Committee of Alezian Elections (CAE) quickly opened party registrations for the Legislative Elections.

Electoral System

The Alezian Union implemented a Mixed-Member Voting to elect its 886 members of Parliament. Similiar to Germany, It combines the First-Past-The-Post and Proportional Representation where each eligible citizen of the Alezian Union elects two people. One representing their constituency and one representing their selected Political Party.

Once elected, the members of the Parliament of the Alezian Union holds the position for five years which then another election (which will be combined with the Premiership Election, making it the Alezian Union's first General Election) will be held. Members of the Parliament have no term limits.

To qualify for a Propotional Representation Seat, a party must receive 2% of the Nation-wide votes in order to receive a seat. Should a party fail, then the remaining seat shall be given to either Independents (which according to Alezian rules could also be members of a party that failed to enter the "big-party list"), depending on conditions.

Initially, the election would only be held using a First-Past-The-Post method. However, the CAE updated the rule in August 2021 where they found that using only FPTP method is unfair, and thus decided to combine the two in order to increase representation.

Campaign and Major Issues

Alezian Union's Membership in the OIC

The Alezian Union's continued membership from North Alezia and South Alezia in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has been met with mixed receptions from the Alezian public. This was made from the result of the latest OIC Summit where some of its members accidentally criticized the Alezian Union in front of the Alezian delegation over its laws on Homosexuality Protection and Recognition which invited some anger from the Alezian public.

Even since 2005, North Alezia's membership in the OIC has been put into question, where North Alezia's principles do not entirely follow with the principles of the OIC itselves. However, North Alezia has represented the OIC in many of its meeting with other International Organization, even getting recognition for being "The Mouthpiece of Islam to the West", and the West has applauded the nation with similiar recognition.

Chairman of the Meme Party, Andi Hasan Nazar-Aveld said that, "The Alezian Union will continue its contribution towards the Islamic Community even with previous misunderstandings of Alezia's comprehension of human rights. However, if the Alezian Union continues being mistreated, then we have no choice but to leave the organization before incidents like this continue."

Chairman of the Alezian Values Party, Sulaiman Hoesnarim said that, "The Alezian Union is a nation of Islamic cultures and of a Muslim majority population. Without the OIC, The status of religious recognition in the Alezian Union might have to be put into question."

Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party, Nuhaymaruddin Hasan said that, "While the incidents on the summit are uncalled for, We still can't forget that the Alezian Union has a policy of Internationalism, which requires the nation to work with international organization, which includes the OIC, in order to increase world stability. It might take a long time, however, I'm sure that the OIC will understand Alezia one day."

According to a public survey by the Alezian Public Surveyor (APS), 41% wanted the Alezian Union to stay in the OIC, 31% wanted the Alezian Union to withdrew from the OIC, and 28% are unsure about the decision.

Education and AUFX

It was planned that in May starting from next year, the Alezian Union Ministry of Education (MINED read Meen-Ed) will hold a union-wide national examination for university admission called the AUFX or the Alezian Union Final Examination. The exam itself would be based of North Alezia's previous examination of NAFX.

However, NAFX in the past has been subjected to criticism over its pressure on Alezian students which "normally would almost feel like it's non-existent". According to the Alezian Children Protection Organization (ACPO), NAFX resulted in an increase of 30% in crimes against children , and an increase of 42% in records of children with signs of stress. This is also due to the nation's tight University Admission Process which happened every June.

United New Alezians leader Mishelainne Routavais said that, "If NAFX has proven to be a factor of children's mental unstability over the past few years, and the government would like to go on with it by repackaging it into AUFX, it means that the government has failed to protect the interest of children safety and happiness". UNA itself is the party who is most against the creation of AUFX, by suggesting an either less-consequential version of AUFX or easening the process of University Admission.

Ryo Seung-Da

Another issue in the election is on what to do with the second-last Premier of North Alezia, Ryo Seung-Da. In her Premiership between 2018-2020, she governed the country with an iron fist and nearly threw the entire nation back to the Iliya Dictatorship Era. However, the National Parliament succesfully enacted an emergency issuing of overthrowing of the Executive Branch, bringing Sa'idah Mahmudaisyah into the Premiership seat.

Ryo Seung-Da herself has been found embezzling AZ$ 192 million after a police finding in November 2020. Throughout her Premiership as well, she has cut funding to various welfare facilities such as the Mental Health Services (MHS) and the Child Protection Services (CPS).

Internally, the Freedom Coalition and the Fundamental Coalition has been fighting over what to do with Ryo Seung-Da. The Freedom Coalition wanted her to be put into the High Court of Alezia. However, the Fundamental Coalition suggested that Ryo Seung-Da's political case should be dismissed, instead giving punishment just on the money embezzelment. The Fundamentals suggested that even with the blunders, Ryo has championed strengthening the law and justice system of Alezia.

Political parties and candidates

According to the rules of the 2021 Alezian Election, a political party would earn a status as a major party if it was supported by more than 1,000,000 people. A major party would earn its own colour unlike minor parties.

The table below lists the major parliamentary parties of the election.
