The 2016 Vonzumierian general election was held on 4 and 18 June 2021. Legislative elections were held concurrently with the first round of the presidential election to elect members of the House of Deputies. The presidential election occurs via a two-round system: if no candidate secures 50%+1 of the vote in the first round, the election advances to a second-round runoff between the two most-voted candidates. Legislative elections on the federal and state levels are conducted via party-list proportional representation.

Incumbent president Ernst Greifelt of the Constitutionalist Party (PdK) was re-elected to a second term with 51.8% of the vote in the second round, defeating Democratic Movement (DB) candidate Niko Matthei. Despite Matthei's defeat, his party was able to secure 97 seats in parliament and thereby remove the PdK coalition's legislative majority. The PdK forged a minority government with the Social Union Party, but has insofar been unable to renew Albert Brodmann's term as chancellor.
