AKH (Miranian: 明石公共放送 Akashi Kōkyō Hōsō; Gothic: 𐌰ᚴ𐌰𐍊𐌴 𐌲𐌰𐍅𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌳𐌹 𐍃ᚴ𐌰𐌻ᚴ𐌹𐌽𐌰𐍃𐍃𐌿𐍃 Akaśe gawaurdi skalkinassus) is Akashi's national public broadcaster. It is always referred to by its Miranian acronym, "AKH" (あこほ A-ko-ho).
AKH is a publicly-owned company funded by payment of a television license fee. It operates four television channels and four radio stations, in addition to an international broadcasting service.
History
AKH was preceded by test transmissions in the 1920s, and Radio Akashi, established in 1932. Broadcasts were disrupted during the Akashian Civil War.
AKH was established in 1941. It was reorganised as a public company independent of the government, and its programming was revamped. It began television broadcasts in 1950. Colour television was introduced in 1960.
During the Summer of Freedom, its offices were occupied by protesters, and for a while it broadcast as Free AKH (自由あこほ Jiyū Akoho; 𐍆𐍂𐌹𐌾𐌴𐌹𐌽𐍃 𐌰𐌲𐌰𐍃 Frijeins Agas). This remains an iconic moment of the protests.
AKH formerly had a monopoly on broadcasting in Akashi. Its radio monopoly was ended in 1968. Its television monopoly was ended in 1985.
Teletext and subtitling services were introduced in the 1970s. Satellite television began broadcasting in 1984. Its online presence began in the 1990s. The digital switchover was completed in 2008.
Organisation
AKH is a public company, independent of the government. It is primarily funded by license fees; commercial advertising is strictly forbidden. It is overseen by the 12-member Executive Board, which is appointed by the National Assembly to be non-political and representative of society.
It has 5 divisions, one for each province. It broadcasts in Miranian and Gothic, with a legal requirement to provide equal access and standing to both.
Internationally, it is a member of the Common Broadcasting Union.
