The Abditis Cognitores (Latin for "Hidden Reconnaissance"), often known as Abdis are a specialized military unit in the Blackhelm Confederate Army responsible for conducting forward reconnaissance operations and gathering intelligence on enemy movements. The unit is known for its expertise in stealth and surveillance, and is highly trained in a variety of disciplines, including reconnaissance and surveillance techniques, communications, and marksmanship.

History

The Abditis Cognitores was established during the Hesperidesian Revolutions, when it became clear that traditional military tactics were not sufficient to combat the insurgent threat. The unit was modeled after similar units in other countries, but was tailored specifically to the unique challenges of the Hesperidesian terrain and population.

Training

The Abditis Cognitores undergo rigorous training in a variety of skills, including:

  • Surveillance and reconnaissance techniques, including long-range observation and photography, and the use of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
  • Communications, including the use of encrypted radios and other secure communications technologies
  • Marksmanship, including both long-range and close-quarters combat
  • Navigation and orienteering, including the use of maps, GPS systems, and other navigational aids

Tactics

The Abditis Cognitores specialize in stealthy, low-visibility operations, and are often deployed in small teams to gather intelligence and report on enemy movements. The unit is frequently tasked with establishing observation posts and conducting surveillance of enemy positions, and is also responsible for guiding artillery and airstrikes onto enemy targets. Typically, the Abditis Cognitores deploy in six-man teams, each team serving a 72-hour rotation at a pre-determined obsevation point before being relieved, with each team working 72-hours on observation duty and then 144-hours off. These teams usually consist of a team leader, a sniper/observer team, a day scout, a night scout, and a communications specialist. Teams may also bring small, man-portable drones along with them as well, which the team leader will operate to further enhance their surveillance in a given area. Additionally, a small four-man headquarters element accompanies each platoon, consisting of a commanding officer, an executive officer, a communications officer, and a drone operator.

The Abditis Cognitores are known for their flexibility and adaptability, and are able to operate in a variety of environments, from urban areas to rugged terrain. The unit is also able to work closely with local populations to gather intelligence and gain the trust of local communities.

Deployment

Abditis Cognitores are typically assigned to Blackhelm Confederate Security Regiments, with a twenty-two man platoon consisting of three six-man teams and a small headquarters unit. Abdi observation posts are considered to be a critical component of the Blackhelm Confederacy's firebase doctrine, allowing troops to better monitor the areas surrounding their bases, and limit insurgent movements in secure areas.
