Al Jahran الجهران is the second- most populous city (after Al Suhal) of the United Sultanates of Suhal. It is also the capital of the Jahran Sultanate and the center of the Jahran Metropolitan Area.
Located on the northern coast of the nation on the ____ Gulf it is just 120 km from the Alqana border. It has a stable population of 2.2 million, placing it second below Al Suhal (6 million) and above Al Basar (1.6 million).
Al Jahran has been long associated with trade, its port making it a hub for local transport of goods and people from Suhal to Alqana, as the desert until the 1980s was treacherous to travel by. The city prospered with this connection to trade, in addition to the off shore coral reefs pearl harvesting gained traction, fast tracking development. In the mid to late 1930s, as the pearl trade declined, interest grew in the oil possibilities of the region. In 1936 rights were granted to Suhal’s petroleum companies to explore for oil. This was followed by a seventy-five-year concession signed in January 1939. However, owing to the desert terrain, inland exploration was fraught with difficulties. In 1958, using a marine drilling platform, oil was struck in the Bin Shaif field at a depth of about 2,669 metres (8,755 ft) spurring another surge in wealth for the region. In June 1960 the port of Al-Nada was constructed as a terminal for the exportation of oil and trade. This led to the wide scale repurposing of the Al Jahran port area.
