Argir, officially the Directorate of Argir, is a nation in southern central Mars. It is surrounded by Unincorporated Mars.

Argir ranks moderately for civil liberties and low for political freedom. Argir is extremely isolated socially from the rest of Mars and the Federation of Sol, which is a direct result of a string of isolationist directors in the 2800-2900s. There are many requirements in order to be appointed to political offices, including acceptable ideologies. There are many civil liberties that are not protected well due to the absence of any type of constitutional document.

Due to Argir’s isolationism, the economy is fairly self-sustaining. Argir produces agricultural products, valuable minerals, and extracted water. In order to be self-sustaining and be a large food producer, Argir has greenhouse dome farms everywhere in the country. Argir has also been experimenting with terraforming a large section of the Galle Crater in the eastern region of the country. Satellite images show that Argir seems to have been successful, since evidence of liquid water has been detected in the area.

Etymology

Argir is most likely an altered spelling of the old name for the large impact crater in the center of the country, Argyre Planitia. Old databases in the Federation National Digital Library suggest that it may have been named for large silver deposits in the area, despite there being none. Another theory is that the name is derived from the ancient mythical island of Argyre in the eastern Mediterranean, however this is more likely to be the origin of the the impact crater's name.
