Asgareth is a prosperous imperialistic state, located in the north of Sovereign Charter. It is bordered by Drekhi to the north-west, Chargren to the south-east and Myraxia sits on the opposite side of the gulf. Asgareth is ruled by the Emperor, who appoints 5 advisors. These individuals make up the imperial Cabinet, which sits on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month with a summer break for 4 months from May to August. The House of Commonfolk, consists of 760 Ministers of Imperialism (MI), who are elected by 2% of the population, known as the electorate. In order to be able to vote you must be a male, aged between 30-40, an Imperial activist, earn over £50,000 a year, and own at least 10 acres of land. The House of Commonfolk aims to pass legislation which would help the people, although this legislation is often ignored by the judiciary and House of Imperialism. The House of Imperialism is the upper house of legislation, and advises the cabinet and consist of 72 men. These members are appointed by the council and must consist of 28 military men, 14 Black guards and 30 councillors.
History
The nation of Asgareth was founded over 2000 years ago by Leximus Altori, a famous philosopher noted for works such as “100 days to glory” and “Clash of Swords”. Altori founded Asgareth following a fall out with the Holy Lands of Old, and aimed to set up a religion-free area which would accept all. However, Altori was quickly overthrown and replaced with a corrupt dictatorship which has lasted for 2000 years. In recent years, there has been widespread trouble across Asgareth. The November Rising was an attempted overthrow by “terrorist” organisations who attempted to socialism to Asgareth. All leaders were captured, tortured and beheaded. Currently, Asgareth is experiencing a crisis following the overthrow of Imperialli Ross by General Edmund de'Lance.
Early History
In the modern world, the Asgarthian Empire comprises one of the largest nations in the world. Yet its rapid expansion is very much a modern idea. Initially, Asgareth started off as 17 independent states; ruled by a variety of kings, emperors, lords and barons. By the year 1000BUA, these city states had merged into the 5 kingdoms that preceded Asgareth. These were Hilcia (NE),Vorden (E), Pertonia (S), Dragni (Midlands) and the largest state Alporta (W). Relations between these states were mixed. While Hilcia (a mining state) and Vorden (a trading state) shared an alliance, Dragni and Alporta were constantly at war with one another, or with Pertonia.
The first well-documented account from this period is Elstoy’s War of the Throne (1954BUA-1904BUA). The King of Pertonia, Alco II had died. His heir was his third cousin, twice removed Elva; who had the misfortune of being a woman. As a result, multiple challengers emerged; the two main candidates being Eckno (a seventh cousin) and Larvo, the brother in law of Alporta’s Emperor Renka I. The war ended with the deaths of Larvo and Elva, prompting Alporta to declare war upon King Eckno I. The war waged for 20 years, encompassing the reigns of King Eckno I, his son Eckno II and his brother Eldor I. Upon the death of Emperor Renka I, peace talks began between Eldor I and Emperor Pasca I. Pertonia and Alporta declared an alliance; one that stayed in place for 400 years.
Between 1894 and 1509, no fewer than 17 wars raged between Dragni and Alporta. These wars proved to be destructive, with some 2.5 million dying as a direct result of conflict (and an estimated 40 million as a result of the famines and diseases caused by them.) In 1509, peace was temporarily brokered by the unification of the two states. King Verko IV was the uncle of Emperor Ascar II. Upon the death of the former, Ascar declared himself King-Emperor and merged the two states together. Peace, and unification, did not last long. The peoples of both nations continued to hate each other, and by 1507 civil war had broken out. Ascar II was killed by Alportian rebels, who branded him a traitor to the state. Declaring independence, Alporta installed Perva III to the throne.
Perva III made a firm alliance with Hilcia in the year 1509, after marrying his daughter to the heir, King Yasi II. In response to this threat, Dragni and Pertonia allied themselves together, in a move that horrified Perva's advisors. As time went on Pertonia and Alporta consistently found themselves at odds, culminating in the assassination of Perva V in 1445. War was declared upon Pertonia the following year, and Hilcia swiftly joined in supporting of Alprota. Vorden and Dragni both initially announced their neutrality. In 1441, however, Lord Pasala of Dragni was killed out hunting, supposedly by a Vordenese spy. As a result the two nations declared war upon each other. While the two wars remained distant, their geographical closeness led many to believe that the war would decide the fate of Esgarth. In 1438, King Eldor VII of Pertonia announced victory against Alporta and deposed Emperor Perva VI. He declared himself the King of Aesgarth, and became the first in a long line of monarchs to claim such a title. It would take another four years (1434), for the Dragnian-Vordenese war to cease, following the deaths of both King Ascar IV and Lord Frena III. From 1433 to 1262, there are no recorded conflicts between the 5 states of Esgarth, and it appears instead that their attentions were very much focused on outside invasions.
In 1262, Emperor Laxa II of Alporta declared themselves King of Aesgarth. This prompted the Dragnian Lord Raspu I and Pertonian King Eldor X to follow suit. The King of Hilcia, Erdoc IV, put forward a solution, wherein the three kings would duel it out for the title. While it had been agreed that only baton swords would be used, Lord Raspu had managed to switch his for a longsword. He stabbed Eldor X through the heart, before beheading Laxa II in front of his wife. Raspu I declared himself the King of Aesgarth. However, the sons of the fallen rulers met and arranged their revenge. Laxa III and Eldor XI attacked Dragni and lay siege to it. The civilians swiftly betrayed Raspu I, and the mob quickly killed him and his entire family.
In 484, Pertonia invaded Hilcia. Vorden declared war on Pertonia in response, prompting Alporta to declare war on Vorden. The war became known as the Second War of Esgarth, and it is here that the first documented use of Esgarth occurs. The war waged for 3 years, before Dragni aligned themselves with Hilcia and Vorden. This proved to be the turning point, and Alporta swiftly withdrew from the war. Alone, and almost completely surrounded, Pertonia surrendered to the trio. The land was divided up, and Pertonia ceased to exist by 478BUA.
Disaster struck the Hilcian-Vorden alliance when a group of Vordenese separatists assassinated King Dako V of Hilcia, in 452. The two states went to war several times over the next two hundred years, finally culminating in the War of the Griffins, which saw the deaths of nine different monarchs; King Erno I, King Erno II, King Willa IV, Lord Raspu II, King Erno III, Lord Raspu III, Lord Frena V, King Willa V and King Erno IV. Hilcia accepted defeat in 216BUA, and were forced to offer land to Vorden in way of apology.
Noticing the weakened state of Hilcia, King Verko VII of Dragni moved to invade the small nation in 184. King Willa VII of Hilcia, realising his people could not fight against Dragni, pledged for the Vordenese to intervene. Lord Palpo II ordered for the invasion of Dragni; a move many recognise as the start of the Fourth War of Esgarth. Emperor Eldurno I realised that Dragni had substantially weakened their western border so as to fight the Vordenese, and moved his troops to invade. With war on both fronts, King Verko VII attempted to escape to Epilo with his family. He was caught along the Vorden-Chargren border, and promptly executed. Dragni surrendered to the Vordense-Alportian alliance in 163, and ceased to exist as a state; its land divided between the two victorious nations.
Vorden, Alportia and Hilcia lived in harmony for over a century, until 52BUA, when Emperor Leximian Altori III acceded to the throne of Hilcia as a result of his mother. Lord Ralca II grew increasingly worried at this, and decided to invade both Hilcia and Alporta. Swiftly, the Alportian army began to crumble, with Leximian Altori III dying at the Battle of Perto. His sons, Leximian Altori IV, Fanchi Altori I and Luxus Altori I all meet similar fates, before Leximus Altori, managed to fight back. He rallied the troops from across Esgarth, and killed Lord Ralca II at the Battle of the Kings in 3BUA. The war did not end there though, for Lord Ralca III pledged to carry on his father's legacy. He met his death at the hands of Leximus in 0BUA, during the Fifth War for Esgarth. Leximus Altori is considered, to this day, as the greatest Asgarthian of all time and as the unifier of the Esgarth.
