Astersjaklinga (eng: Eastern island blade) was a weapon developed in early medevial Scandera by the rather poor island region Asterarna. While the richer Jarls, kings and drotins of the riverlands, the sund, and the south, the wealthy city states in Etiskio and, the kings of Vedian were all able to field heavily armoured huskarls in full suits of maile and with heavy shields so did the poor fishermen, raiders and small farmers of Asterarna lack that ability. To counter that disadvantage did they develop Astaraklingan that became a feared symbol of the poor island region and with it could even an eelfisher from the island cut through maile of a huskarl with ease.

However the main drawback of the blade was the very short length compared to the weight of the weapon and compared to a mace or a pure axe did it not pack as much of a punch. As a reslut did it not gain widespread use amongst most other Scanderan regions as a main weapon even if it appeared amongst skirmishers from most of the continent and even Taranakan kermen were known to use it.

The end of the weapon as a a main armament came in the high middleages when the advancements in plate armours and plated leather made most swords obsolete and the people on the islands were more and more forced to rely on axes, maces, billhocks and poleaxes. However despite this so were the sword used amongst sailors where armour still remained rare and battles often were fought in very close quarters, Even to this day so does men from Asterana use the sword in the modern royal and federal navy as a mostly ceremonial weapon even if it's officially labelled s as a melee weapon for boarding actions.
