The Aydin CAPTOR (Encapsulated Torpedo) Mine is a 530mm anti-submarine warfare (ASW) mine in usage with the Republican Navy.
Design
The Aydin CAPTOR Mine was designed using lessons learned in past techniques. The system has been in use since the 1960s and has continually been upgraded throughout the years. The mine itself is equipped with various sensors and a pressure body to keep the mine from corrosive salt-waters until necessary.
The mine is delivered into position by air, sea, or undersea means. Upon entering the water the mine will either utilise small on-board motors to guide it into an exact GPS position or immediately begin to sink to the ocean bottom. When the mine touches the bottom, it will anchor itself with a five-to-ten meter cable and lift itself to hand on the end of this connector. Passive sensors will then listen for passing submarines and, should one both come close enough and appear as 'attractive' to the CAPTOR's on-board systems - Each CAPTOR is equipped with a small acoustic database and sifting program to assist it in targeting correctly - it will launch the Torpedo.
The torpedo, a Type 14A Helix Lightweight Torpedo, will ascend to the estimated depth of the contact and begin circling over the CAPTOR with it's active acoustic homing signal in operation to guide the torpedo in to it's target.
