Destroyer Squadrons

Destroyer squadrons were initially created in the early period of modern naval warfare. The squadron would serve as a flanking force for the main battleship squadrons in order to pin the enemy into a tight formation. In modern usage, a destroyer squadron is a mixed escort group with a majority destroyer build. Up until the late 1940s a Destroyer squadron followed a template of two cruisers and eight destroyers. After the naval downgrades and modernization packages, destroyer squadrons became modular units that were able to attach and detach from larger organizational bodies as needed. This has allowed the Royal Navy to organize task forces with units given universal training in task force and squadron-based maneuvers.

Destroyer Squadron One (DesRon I)

H.M.S Ocean Crescent (DDG-76)

Destroyer Squadron One, or DesRon I, is the oldest squadron in the Royal Navy to feature a destroyer as it's primary component. Created in 1894 as a screening body for torpedo-boat destroyers, it served in the Rodar-Belfrasian war to blockade Rodarian ports and conduct battle maneuvers to keep the Rodarian navy in port. As the Royal Navy began downsizing, DesRon I became the only Destroyer squadron in Royal Naval history to feature a battle-ship as it's command vessel, albeit for five months before the HMS Dauntless was scrapped in 1963.
