The Flag of California , also known as the Californian Ensign,[2] is based on the British maritime Red Ensign – a red field with the Union Jack in the canton or upper hoist corner – augmented or defaced with the Coat of Arms of California .
The current flag was designed and adopted for use on the colony's ships in 1909 , was quickly adopted as California's national flag, and given statutory recognition in 1910.
