Canton, officially the Canton Republic, is a country in East Asia. It lies along the coast in the north of the South China Sea, neighboring the People's Republic of China (PRC) mainly to the north and southwest, Hong Kong and Macau to the south and the Republic of China (Taiwan in the northeast. The territory controlled by the Canton Republic consists of the Cantonese mainland as well as the five island territories of the Pingtan Islands, Yangshu Island, Yanglü Island, the Tungshan (Dongshan) Islands, and the Wanshan Islands, which collectively occupy approximately 190,000km² (73,000 square miles). The capital is Guangzhou, where over a tenth of the highly urbanized population is concentrated. Other major cities in the Canton Republic include Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Foshan.
