Chiapas, officially the Republic of Chiapas, is a sovereign country in North and Central America. It borders Mexico to the northwest, Yucatan to the north, Guatemala to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The capital is Tuxtla Gutiérrez, and has a population of 5,543,828

The country was established amidst a violent three-way civil war in the 1840's: the state attempted to secede from Mexico, but at the same time had to deal with a revolt from the Mayan population, who wished for greater representation and a redistribution of the fields. The United States invaded Mexico during the Mexican-American War intervened diplomatically, and after a few years the Republic of Yucatán and Chiapas was formally recognized.
