The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) is the most senior appointment in the Royal Gallambrian Air Force (RGAF), responsible to the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS). The rank associated with the position is Air Chief Marshal. The role encompasses "the delivery of aerospace capability, enhancing the Air Force's reputation and positing the Air Force for the future". It does not include direction of air operations, which is the purview of the Deputy Commander-in-Chief (Operations), a three-star position responsible to the CDS in such circumstances by nominally reporting to the CAS.
The Chief of Air Staff may be selected from any of the RGAF's Air-Vice Marshal appointments, although the Deputy Commander-in-Chief (Operations) or Vice-Chief of the Air Staff are the most frequent appointees. While every chief to date has been aircrew qualified, there is no legal restriction on appointees from other disciplines. The CAS is appointed by the Prime Minister and is usually a fixed-term tenure, after which the member normally retires, unless offered a more senior role.
