Commonwealth Guard
The Commonwealth Guard, also called the National Guard or Provincial Guard, is a subordinate service of the Commonwealth of Reikland Army and serves as a gendarmerie and rapid mobilization reserve. In peacetime, it's nearly 400,000 members serve as a police force on provincial highways and as a response force during hostage or other highly volatile situations. During wartime, it is expanded to serve as a defense against possible invasion, tasked with manning fortifications and other defensive positions.
Origins
The Commonwealth Guard evolved from the Fyrd, the local militia that defended settlements and shires for much of Reikish history. In 1308 AD, the Territorial Army was formed to provide a full time Gendarmerie force as well as free up Army troops from defensive duties during wartime. In 1416, the Territorial Army was reformed to the Commonwealth Guard while retaining the same mission.
