Cotric science

Cotric science generally refers to science conducted by Cotric methods, and usually intended with Cotric religious goals. Practice of science is highly important in accumulating Accomplishment as a powerful modality of Learning.

The proper definition of 'Cotric science' has been debated by academics, as whether or not advancements made by Cotric scholars were truly part of their process of attaining Accomplishment is difficult to ascertain, in addition to where to draw limits on the fields Cotric science covers, as well as corresponding concepts and terms in Cotrism itself.

To Cotrists themselves, Cotric science broadly is simply one form of attaining Accomplishment, while the religion has different terms for natural science (referred to as 外學 ngoi hok 'external learning'), social science, and comprehension of the self.

For a long period Cotric science yielded understandings the most advanced in the world and completely unchallenged, until the East Cataian civilization's decline following the devastating 16th-17th century continent-spanning wars. Asuran orientalists, particularly those from Carcossica, played an important role in presenting and translating products of Cotric science to the western audience in the XXXX.

Method

The scientific method is entirely rejected by Cotrists; empiricism is regarded as being subservient to transient phenomena, as opposed to the Cotrist who researches upon 'sacred' science that is wholly independent yet all-encompassing. The subject and object of Cotric science is the Way, which as Cotric cosmology dictates is reflected through every material of existence, which gives the Cotric scientific process itself direction and purpose beyond mere material observations. The Cotric scientist still studies, observes and experiments, but identifies new reflections of the Way and accumulates Learning from the process, while completing the community's knowledge of the universe.

In general natural phenomena are interpreted very differently by Cotrists compared to Asuran science, mostly being explained using Cotric cosmology. While Cotrists arrive at same if not more detailed observations as their western counterparts during the heyday of Cotric scientific progress, the explanations and framework for rationalization is vastly different. Explanation to observations is usually built upon prior accumulated Learning by the community which makes it near-impossible to propose radically divergent models.

Cotric science is a very restricted process often being undertaken only by a few observatories. It uses very specific, codified, and difficult notation and vocabulary, even to commoners of Cotric societies. Science in Cotrism is also regarded as esoteric by its fundamental nature. The privilege of conducting research is solely enjoyed by higher-ranking clerics and this combined with other aspects of Cotric science has led to its learnings being poorly disseminated throughout society.
