The Federal Northian Army or Standing Army of the Northern States (Northian: here) is the principal service of the Northern States specializing in land warfare. It was founded by decree of the Congress of the States of 1824 to provide a permanent land force as opposed to ad hoc forces assembled to address specific threats and conflicts and dissolved at their abatement.

The Federal Northian Army is the most populous arm amongst the Northan forces, with 148,000 officers and enlisted persons in active service and 30,000 reserved. Currently, its units form up two divisions and two independent brigades in combat forces and five logistical departments. It possesses 26 garrisons of the first scale across the Northern States and more outposts and installations of lesser scale. Its personnel participate in international deployments and exercise regularly, with 7.2% of the total strength currently abroad.

Name

As opposed to the Royal Northian Navy and Royal Northian Air Force, the Federal Northian Army is not prefixed with "Royal", because the army was explicitly founded under the control of the Congress of the States, which was becoming an institution that met at regular intervals around that time and thus expecting to manage affairs of states more extensively. This decision also continues the belief that the army was assembled and paid for by the states only for specified ends, even if placed under the King's authority limited by the terms of the law assembling the army. Meanwhile, the navy was regarded more as the King's own responsibility to the States, in principle to be funded by the King's private coffers. However, practical differences between these two views have been levelled by the mid-19th century, when all armed forces were brought under the centralizing responsible government.

Commensurately, the oath sworn by new officers dedicates "loyalty to all Northian States and lawful obedience to the King-in-the-Congress (en-samkurtē wikposim) and other officers before-the-congress (anti-samkurtō akterəṇġ) lawfully appointed and lawfully caused to be lawfully appointed."
