Fight Against Corruption (Midrasian: Lutte Contre la Corruption) is a Midrasian political party formed by journalist Sara Évora on 12 June 2011.
Initially formed as a single-issue party aimed at curbing corruption both within the political sphere and in economics, the party has since expanded to focus on issues of equal rights and political reform. The party has never held a seat within the Public Assembly or Senate, however has held several seats within local councils in areas such as Lotrič and Almiaro.
History
Fight Against Corruption was formed in 2011 by journalist Sara Évora. Évora, who had worked for over 15 years as an investigative journalist, specialising in cases of political and economic corruption, said she felt tired of the level of corruption within Midrasian society and sought to bring about a new movement for anti-corruption legislation. Although on international levels, Midrasia ranks relatively low for corruption levels, Évora suggests that levels are 'far higher than research suggests'. Évora particularly made note of the high level of legislative influence given to political lobbyists on behalf of Midrasian corporations.
In their first election in 2013, the party failed to gain any seats, however was able to gain one position on the Almiaro local council. The following year Évora announced she was to leave her job at The Royal Standard in order to dedicate her full attention to the running of the party. In 2015 the party was also able to gain a second council seat in Lotrič following local elections.
The party has stated that it will participate in the 2017 general election, although low levels of funding will mean the party will only run candidates in a select number of constituencies. In June 2017 notable Midrasian politician Melcion Portas announced he would be defecting to the party after a schism with the leadership of the Social Democratic Party. Portas highlighted the ongoing investigation into the Prime minister and the lack of accountability within the party as his reasons for defection. However the formation of the Progressive Alliance led Portas to defect once more, though the LCLC indicated it would be backing the Progressives in the upcoming election.
Publications
Several members of the party have backgrounds in investigative journalism and have in the past contributed many articles exposing the practices of corrupt politicians or business officials. The party's founder and current leader, Sara Évora was previously a member of Midrasian newspapers the Observer and La Republique as an investigative journalist. Évora's most notable work was an investigation into the affairs of the leadership of the Workers' Party of Midrasia in 2006. Although at the time resultant investigations yielded insufficient evidence; later investigations used Évora's evidence as the basis for further exposés in 2012, leading to the imprisonment of party leader David Legeda.
The party publishes a monthly magazine detailing the work of the party along with recent investigative trends within the journalist community, highlighting key areas of governmental mismanagement. Several members of the party have also in the past contributed to the satirical magazine Le Picayune, albeit under pseudonyms. The party also presents a yearly reward to journalists working outside of the party for works of investigative reporting.
