The First Empire of Hoterallia was a historical empire and great power that existed from the First Shiro Restoration in 1578 until the fall and outbreak of the Second Reunification War in 1939. It encompassed the same territories that the nation still holds today.

After the First Unification War, Hoterallia reestablished its former royal family as the head of state, the Shiro dynasty held absolute powers until 1824 when the first constitution was written, when the early National Diet was established, they held power almost equal to the Emperor. The empire was an economic powerhouse in the world, dominating trades and major diplomacy players in Olivacia.

Under the last few years of Emperor Kokun, the Emperor swiftly gained large power and the National Diet slowly lost its grip and control over the constitution and the nation. The Empire's economic development slowed down at the start of the 20th Century, leading to some cracks in the government and some unstable ideological thinkers. In 1939, the People's Revolutionary Council of Hoterallia launched an uprising against the Imperial Government, which fled east and established a stronghold in Gerkoller and Eastern Hoterallia. In 1950, Emperor Norihi stepped down as Emperor to run the Imperial Force as a governor, ending the 400-year-old Empire.

The Second Reunification War of Hoterallia officially came to a close on March 28, 1949. A period of reforms and restructuring followed. In 1951, with several international bits of help, a newer and more proper constitution was enacted, the National Act of 1950 continue to be implemented, officially bringing the First Empire of Hoterallia to an end, and Hoterallia's Imperial Army was replaced with Hoterallia Self-Defense Forces. Reformation and reconstruction continued until 1952, eventually forming the current constitutional monarchy known as the Second Empire of Hoterallia.

Terminology

The historical state is frequently referred to as the "First Empire of Hoterallia", the "Hoterallian Empire", or "Imperial Hoterallia" in Common. In Hoterallian, it is referred to as Dai Hoterajia Teikoku (ほてらじあ本帝国), which translates to "Empire of Great Hoterallia" (Dai "Great", Hoterajia "Hoterallia", Teikoku "Empire"). Teikoku is itself composed of the nouns Tei "referring to an emperor" and -koku "nation, state", so literally "Imperial State" or "Imperial Realm".

This meaning is significant in terms of geography, encompassing Hoterallia, and its surrounding areas. The nomenclature Empire of Hoterallia had existed since the anti-Hosu domains, which founded their new government after the First Unification War, to form a modern state to resist foreign domination. Later the Empire emerged as a major great power in Anteria.

Due to its name in kanji characters and its flag, it was also given the exonym "Empire of the Southern Phoenix".
